Abstract

Coastal river basins are influenced by multiple interacting factors while most index-based assessments focus on groundwater and evaluate a single water use based suitability analysis. This study involved thirty-eight surface water samples collected from estuaries backwaters tanks and the Gadilam River within the Gadilam River Basin. Eighteen water quality parameters were measured and separate indices computed for drinking, domestic and irrigation use, with entropy-derived weights verifying the drinking classification. Composition is dominated by a longitudinal salinity gradient. Electrical conductivity ranges from 284 to 8,788 µS/cm, the sodium to chloride ratio converges on the seawater value of 0.858, and chloride-based mixing fractions reach 15% downstream. Two additional controls act independently with nutrient enrichment indicated by the strong correlation between nitrate and phosphate (r = 0.942) and higher concentrations upstream of the tidal limit while redox mobilization of iron and manganese is strongly correlated (r = 0.828) and unrelated to salinity. The drinking water quality index spans 28.8 to 466.1, averaging 42.4, 73.8 and 241.9 in the upper, middle and lower reaches, and classifies 17 samples Excellent, eight Good, seven Poor, one Very poor and five Unsuitable. Twenty samples comply with the Indian drinking water specification while 18 do not with iron being the largest contributor to poor drinking water quality in 20 samples. Fifteen of the 21 lakes rated Excellent for drinking are classified as Good for domestic use while six sources classified as non-potable due to iron remain suitable for irrigation.

Hydrochemical Characterization and Organic Pollution Assessment of an Urban River Catchment under Anthropogenic Pressure: The Case of the Téguéré River (Korhogo, Côte d'Ivoire)

Rapid and unplanned urbanisation in Sub-Saharan African cities exerts severe pressure on urban aquatic ecosystems due to the lack of adequate sanitation systems. This study evaluates the hydrochemical quality and organic pollution levels of surface water in the Téguéré River catchment (Korhogo, northern Côte d’Ivoire)...

Groundwater and Surface Water Quality for Irrigation in the Brazilian Semi-arid Region: Hydrochemical and Microbiological Assessment

Anthropogenic pressures and climate change are increasing the risk of water quality degradation in semi-arid regions, particularly where water resources are intensively exploited for irrigation. This study evaluated the quality of groundwater (wells tapping sedimentary and crystalline aquifers) and surface water (the J...

Physicochemical quality and irrigation suitability of groundwater resources in the Feija aquifer (southeastern Morocco)

Groundwater is the primary water resource in the arid Feija plain (Zagora, Morocco), but its quality is increasingly threatened by climate change and intensive agriculture. This study assessed the physicochemical quality and irrigation suitability of the Feija aquifer. Over three years (2022–2024), 96 groundwater sampl...

Hydrogeochemical controls on drinking and irrigation water suitability of spring water in the Champawat District, Uttarakhand: insights from multivariate statistical analysis

In the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, natural springs constitute the primary freshwater source for a large rural population. To investigate the spring water quality of the Lohawati catchment, 27 spring water samples (n = 27) were collected and analyzed to identify the contributions of geogenic and anthropogenic inp...

Alteration of Mineral Balances in Groundwater and Surface Waters of Mangalmé: Correlation Matrix and Heterogeneous Critical Anomaliese

This study focuses on a semi-arid area of Chad—the Mangalmé department—where access to drinking water remains a major concern. The population relies primarily on groundwater (wells) and surface water (ponds/reservoirs) for drinking and domestic use. These resources are affected by climate change, notably through decl...
