Abstract

Leadership is a key element in organizational functioning, particularly in operational environments characterized by high complexity, the need for coordination among diverse professionals, and the requirement to respond to unforeseen situations. In this context, this study aims to analyze the relationship between leadership and the operational efficiency of companies operating at the Port of Santos, focusing specifically on communication, people management, and decision-making. The research is qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive in nature, based on a review and analysis of scientific studies regarding leadership, professional performance, organizational communication, people management, decision-making, and port operations. The analysis encompasses both domestic and international studies, highlighting research directly related to port work and the maritime sector. The review results indicate that leadership should not be viewed solely as a mechanism for task control; its role also encompasses communication, guidance, professional development, problem-solving, team support, and the creation of conditions conducive to continuous improvement. Studies on port workers in Santos reveal a perceived link between leadership and team performance, while international research connects specific leadership practices to organizational adaptation, continuous improvement, and performance within maritime contexts. The study concludes that leadership can be a factor associated with operational efficiency, especially when integrated with clear communication, personnel development, worker participation, and contextualized decision-making. However, it is important to note that this literature review cannot establish universal causality nor replace specific empirical investigations within companies at the Port of Santos.
