Desenvolvimento de repositórios institucionais nas instituições federais de ensino brasileiras: desafios e contribuições para a gestão da informação científica e o acesso aberto
Abstract
This study examines institutional repositories (IRs) as a strategic tool for digital preservation, scientific information management, and the promotion of open access within Brazilian Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFEs). It aims to analyze the importance of IRs in IFEs by describing their role, identifying benefits and challenges, and discussing the librarian's involvement in this process. The methodology employs bibliographic research—qualitative in approach and exploratory and descriptive in nature—conducted using the SciELO, Google Scholar, and CAPES journal portal databases, covering studies primarily from 2021 to 2025. The findings highlight that repositories increase the visibility and impact of the institutions' scientific output; however, their effectiveness depends on overcoming barriers such as difficulties in consolidating institutional policies, inadequate technological infrastructure, challenges regarding standardized metadata entry, and low adoption of self-archiving practices. The librarian's role is also highlighted regarding the organization, preservation, and dissemination of scientific output, even though their work is often constrained by a lack of human resources and institutional support.
