Abstract
Generating triplet states in dye molecules that do not undergo conventional intersystem crossing is of interest for a variety of applications. In this work, the photophysical processes that occur in a terrylene bisimide (TBI) cyclophane and in its host-guest complex with 1,6-dibromopyrene (Ka = 1.5 × 104 M-1 in dichloromethane at 293 K) are studied. First, the pristine cyclophane was studied by transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy measurements in nonpolar toluene and polar dichloromethane. For toluene, the TA data indicate only two relaxation pathways, fluorescence (with a fluorescence quantum yield of 40%) and internal conversion to the ground state. In the more polar solvent dichloromethane, the pristine TBI cyclophane undergoes symmetry breaking charge separation (SBCS) after excitation to the S1 state based on clearly identified TBI radical anion and radical cation spectral signatures, with subsequent relaxation to the ground state without any evidence for triplet state population. In contrast, for the complex with dibromopyrene, the formation of a long-lived triplet state (a lifetime of τ = 8.47 μs) is formed from the SBCS state, which is attributed to the external heavy atom effect.
The cage escape yield (ΦCE), i.e., the separation of the geminate radical pair formed upon bimolecular excited-state electron transfer, is a key parameter that governs the efficiency of photoredox transformations. For Fe(III) photosensitizers featuring doublet ligand-to-metal charge transfer excited states, ΦCE are not...

This work presents a TD-DFT computational study of the visible-light-driven [2 + 2] cycloaddition between alkynes and bromodifluoroacetylsilanes, leading to gem-difluorocyclobutenones. Visible-light irradiation of bromodifluoroacetylsilanes was recently shown by Zhou et al. to generate difluoroketene in situ for [2 + 2...

The photophysics of anthracene has extensively been studied, and thus, it serves as a classic standard for understanding the photophysics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Anthracene undergoes efficient intersystem crossing to populate the triplet state. Alternative pathways to generate triplets in solutions are unk...
Anthracene-based compounds that undergo photocycloaddition have garnered extensive attention for the fabrication of light-responsive crystalline materials. Nevertheless, their solid-state photocycloaddition mechanism remains elusive. Herein, transient absorption spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations was e...

Triplet-triplet energy transfer (TEnT) processes, where energy is transferred from the triplet state of a donor (or photosensitizer, PS) to the singlet ground state of an acceptor (substrate), were applied to investigate E → Z photocatalyzed isomerization of alkenes. Using Fermi's golden rule and the four-state model,...
