Abstract
The disclosure of private information on Instagram has become common among Generation Z in Surabaya. This study applies the Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory covering private information, boundaries, information control and ownership, rule-based management, and privacy management dialectics to explore how this generation balances privacy protection and social interaction. Using a descriptive quantitative method, data were collected from 100 respondents through a questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS. The findings indicate that all five CPM indicators fall within the high category, with an overall average score of 4.02. Respondents demonstrate high awareness of private information while continuing to engage in selective disclosure for personal enjoyment, staying current, and allowing Instagram friends to view their information. Privacy boundaries are relatively strong but flexible and context-dependent, while disclosure is managed through selective audience control, privacy settings, and risk–benefit considerations. Privacy Management Dialectics obtained the highest average score (4.09), highlighting the ongoing balance between information sharing and privacy protection. The study underscores their ability to consciously manage the tension between social engagement and privacy, providing practical insights for promoting responsible social media use.
