Digital Transformation in University Libraries: A Case Study of Digital Archiving Project at the Central Library in Basra University

Abstract

This study aims to explore the digital transformations that may occur in university libraries. The study focus on a case study of a Digital Archiving Project implemented at the Central Library of Basra University in Iraq in collaboration with the Digital Information Center at the AL-Abbas Holy Shrine Library. This study is the first of its type to present a comprehensive overview of the project’s objectives methodologies and results. The aim is to assess the impact of the transition form traditional archiving practices to digital applications. This is particularly important in the field of theses and dissertations. Based on project documents reports from participating institutions and observations on the archiving processes software used, digitization techniques, and data management processes, a qualitative case study approach was employed. The project resulted in easier access to academic content reduced the administrative workload, and reduced the risk of data loss and damage. Additionally, long-term preservation plans and a frequent backup strategy have ensured the sustainability and accessibility of digital content. The project not only improved operational functions but has also contributed significantly to preserving the legacy of Iraqi academics and has strengthened the role of university libraries in the development of digital libraries. All of this presents an important opportunity for colleges and universities as part of their efforts to develop their information services. By creating a workable and scalable operational model this case study shows not only how digital transformation can enrich the national infrastructure for scientific research, but also how libraries should strategically navigate the digital environment.
