Evaluation of the Implementation of Health and Safety Program in the Automotive Workshop at Carment National High School
Abstract
This study evaluated the implementation and effectiveness of the Health and Safety Program in the Automotive Workshop of Carmen National High School. It focused on the current condition of safety practices, safety practices implemented in the workshop, emergency preparedness, and hazards and risks present in the workshop. The study employed a descriptive quantitative research design. The respondents consisted of 100 students and graduates of the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track, Industrial Arts Strand, specializing in Automotive Servicing, selected from a population of 122 using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were gathered using a researcher-made questionnaire that was validated by experts and demonstrated excellent internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.9139. The findings showed that the Health and Safety Program was generally effective. Respondents strongly agreed that safety guidelines were visible and understandable and that the implemented safety practices were effective in preventing accidents. Safety practices related to tool and equipment handling, teacher supervision, safety orientation, and emergency preparedness were also generally rated positively. However, areas requiring improvement included the consistent use of personal protective equipment, workshop cleanliness and orderliness, waste management, maintenance documentation, first-aid and emergency response training, and the mitigation of hazards such as poor ventilation, noise and fumes, overcrowding, exposed wiring, slippery floors, and improper storage of materials. The Health and Safety Program of the Automotive Workshop was generally effective in promoting a safe learning environment. Nevertheless, sustained improvement in PPE provision and compliance, housekeeping, emergency response training, facility maintenance, and hazard control is necessary to strengthen the program and ensure a safer and more conducive workshop environment for Automotive Servicing students.
