THE IMPACT OF LEARNER-CENTERED TEACHING ON STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING
Abstract
Learner-centered teaching has become an increasingly important approach in contemporary English language education. Unlike traditional teacher-centered instruction, learner-centered teaching emphasizes students’ active participation, individual needs, interests, autonomy, and responsibility for the learning process. This study examines the impact of learner-centered teaching on students’ English language learning, focusing on learner motivation, classroom participation, communicative competence, and learner autonomy. The study employs a mixed-method approach involving classroom observation, questionnaires, and pre- and post-instruction language assessments. The findings indicate that learner-centered instruction contributes to increased studentengagement, greater willingness to communicate, improved confidence, and more active participation in English lessons. The study also demonstrates that collaborative activities, problem-solving tasks, discussions, presentations, peer assessment, and self-reflection can support the development of learners’ communicative competence and autonomy. The findings suggest that learner-centered teaching creates a more interactive and supportive learning environment in which students become active participants rather than passive recipients of knowledge. The study concludes that the systematic integration of learner-centered strategies can improve theeffectiveness and meaningfulness of English language learning.
