South Atlantic range extensions of the caridean shrimps Synalpheus pandionis Coutière, 1909 (Alpheidae) and Periclimenaeus perlatus (Boone, 1930) (Palaemonidae), identified using an integrative taxonomic approach
Abstract
We report range extensions for two species of caridean shrimp, Synalpheus pandionis Coutière, 1909 and Periclimenaeus perlatus (Boone, 1930), from the continental shelf off Bahia, Brazil. These records represent the southernmost occurrences for both species in the south-western Atlantic. Synalpheus pandionis was found associated with the sponge Mycale ( Zygomycale ) angulosa (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864), while P. perlatus was found associated with the sponge Aplysina fistularis (Pallas, 1766). We provide morphological diagnoses and DNA sequences (16S) for our South Atlantic specimens, contributing to the knowledge of their species’ biogeography and ecology.
