This work has identified and characterized PSA4 (Photosystem I Assembly 4), a thylakoid membrane protein conserved in land plants and green algae and proposed that PSA4 and YCF4 form a dedicated complex that promotes the assembly of the PsaA/PsaB heterodimer during the early steps of PSI biogenesis in chloroplasts.
It is suggested that TerC is involved in the transport of Mn2+ and Ca2+ across the thylakoid membrane, and that the absence of this function contributes to the albinotic phenotype observed in the terc seedlings.

The rice plastidial phosphorylase (Pho1) is essential for optimal starch synthesis and plays an additional role in modifying photosystem I (PSI) activity via its interaction with PsaC. Pho1 contains an intrinsically disordered region, L80, which acts as a negative modulator of plant growth and development as well as st...

It is demonstrated that SecE1 is critically required for chloroplast biogenesis by sustaining photosynthetic protein transport and accumulation, as well as supercomplex assembly, and that its loss elicits retrograde signals that reshape nuclear gene expression to mitigate plastid dysfunction.
Analysis of energetic properties of gel-embedded supercomplexes demonstrated that excitation energy transfer in the IsiA-PsaL complex is highly efficient, suggesting enhanced efficiency may be a key factor underlying the downsizing of the IsiA-PSI assembly, which could compensate for the smaller size of the complex.

In order to prevent damage by excess light, light harvesting antennae can switch to an energy dissipative mode (termed non-photochemical quenching, NPQ). In higher plants, this switch is facilitated by the presence of Photosystem II subunit S (PsbS) protein, which was discovered 25 years ago. While the role of PsbS in...

Photosystem I (PSI) of terrestrial plants typically contains an antenna system smaller than that of aquatic algae, presumably an adaptation to terrestrial high-light conditions. Moreover, green plants face multiple other stresses including drought when colonizing terrestrial environments and have evolved effective prot...
