Abstract
Natural dyes such as alizarin and cochineal are gaining renewed attention as sustainable alternatives to synthetic chromophores with promising nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Here, we present a systematic study of their linear and NLO responses in both solution and solid-state environments. Steady-state absorption and emission spectra were recorded, and excited-state dynamics were analyzed using time-correlated single-photon counting. Absolute fluorescence quantum yields were determined with an integrating sphere. Two-photon absorption cross-sections were evaluated via two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) measurements, while third harmonic generation experiments on dye-doped PVA thin films enabled estimation of the effective third order NLO susceptibility χ(3). The results reveal distinct structure-property relationships driven by molecular rigidity and conjugation. Cochineal exhibits stronger two-photon activity in solution, consistent with its extended and flexible charge-transfer framework. In contrast, alizarin demonstrates a significantly enhanced third order NLO response in the solid state, with χ(3) approaching nearly twice that of fused silica, attributed to its higher rigidity and matrix-induced ordering. These findings emphasize the decisive role of molecular structure and solid-state organization in NLO performance and highlight the potential of natural dyes for multiphoton bioimaging, optical limiting, and polymer-based nonlinear photonic applications.
Chalcogen substitution provides a powerful strategy for tuning the optoelectronic properties of organic sensitizers. Here, Here, twelve tetrahydroquinoline (THQ) based dyes belonging to three parent series (THQ1, THQ2, and THQ3) and incorporating O, S, Se, and Te were systematically investigated using DFT (B3LYP/6-31...

Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is an absorption-like method that is particularly suitable for materials that strongly absorb or scatter light and are therefore difficult to investigate using conventional reflectance or transmittance measurements. However, its capability to provide quantitative information on the opti...

Although squaraine dyes are commonly praised as candidates for light-based applications, little is known about their excited state landscape beyond the low-energy visible light region. Our work aims for an improved understanding of the photophysical properties of squaraines at the example of N-isobutyl substituted an...

Polymetallic nanoclusters (NCs) offer a powerful route to brighter and more tunable luminescent materials, while biopolymer ligands provide additional advantages for sensing and bioimaging. However, the mechanisms responsible for luminescence enhancement remain poorly understood, particularly for DNA- and protein-prote...

Merocyanine (MC) dyes are among the most versatile and tunable chromophores owing to their structural flexibility. However, their excited state dynamics, which often lead to fluorescence quenching by ultrafast non-radiative decay pathways such as photoisomerization or relaxation through conical intersections, are poorl...

Donor–acceptor chromophores based on 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobuta-1,3-diene (TCBD) are promising materials for optoelectronic applications; however, their utility is often restricted by intrinsically weak fluorescence caused by efficient non-radiative decay pathways. Herein, we report a new series of donor-substituted, tri...
