Effect of Activated Carbon as an Additive on the Anaerobic Digestion of Food Wastewater

Abstract

Activated carbon (AC) may improve methane production, but its performance can depend on substrate loading and incubation time. This study evaluated 60-day batch anaerobic digestion of food wastewater at 38 °C using substrate-to-inoculum (S/I) ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 on a volatile-solids mass basis, three nominal AC particle sizes (4, 45 and 150 μm), and AC doses of 5 and 10 g/L. In the processed dataset, at S/I = 1.5 the highest day-5 methane yield was 49.9% above the control, whereas day-60 yields were lower than the corresponding controls in all AC treatments. Endpoint soluble Ni concentrations were lower in all AC treatments, and Co concentrations were generally lower. The metal pattern suggests a possible association between nutrient availability and final methane yield. The results highlight the need to assess early methane gains together with final yield and metal availability. AC plus trace-element supplementation should be evaluated in future studies before operational recommendations are made.

The effect of urea addition on biogas production from beneng taro starch wastewater

Anaerobic digestion (AD) applied to Beneng taro starch wastewater (BTSW) presents an attractive route for combining wastewater treatment with renewable energy recovery. Nevertheless, biogas generation from this type of substrate is often constrained because carbohydrate-dominated wastewater tends to contain insufficien...

Effect of Substrate to Inoculum Ratio on Methane Production and Organic Matter Removal during Solid State Anaerobic Digestion of Beef Manure and Sawdust Mixture

This study was conducted to determine the optimal substrate/inoculum (S/I) ratio for solid state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) of beef manure and sawdust bedding mixtures. The organic material removal and methane yield performance were evaluated at five different S/I levels (1, 2, 4, 50, and beef manure alone on a VS bas...

Operational Parameters Affecting Methane Yield and Volatile Solids Removal in Food Waste Anaerobic Digestion: A Review

Food waste is a biodegradable resource with potential for energy recovery through anaerobic digestion. However, digestion performance varies with substrate characteristics, reactor configurations, and operating conditions. This review evaluates the effects of feed-to-inoculum ratio, organic loading rate, hydraulic re...

Upgrading cola wastewater-derived organics as an effective carbon source in biological denitrification.

Cola wastewater, generated during the production of sugar-containing beverages, is a low-toxicity effluent rich in organic matter and may serve as a promising external carbon source for biological denitrification. However, its phosphate content often exceeds the relevant quality limit, and its low carbon bioavailabilit...

Suitability of Agro-Industrial Residues as Co-Substrates for Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Microalgal Biomass

Microalgal biomass is a valuable substrate for anaerobic digestion and produces biogas with a high methane content. Its performance can be further improved through co-digestion with organic waste, which also enables the valorization of this waste. Three agricultural wastes were tested as co-substrates for Scenedesmus b...

Holistic Assessment of Sewage Sludge Co-digestion With Glycerol: Process Performance, Priming Effect, and Microbial Dynamics

Mono-digestion of sewage sludge (SS) is limited due to low C/N ratios, a low organic matter content and poor biodegradability of the organic fraction. Several studies recommend its co-digestion with crude glycerol (CG), a by-product of biodiesel production, to overcome these limitations. As previous studies primarily f...
