Rare Tumors of the Prostate: a Review of the Literature and Case Series
Abstract
The article presents a literature review dealing with rare mesenchymal tumors of the prostate, illustrated by a series of corresponding clinical cases. Information on the prevalence of these neoplasms, their clinical manifestations, and CT and MRI features are briefly summarized. Five rare cases of mesenchymal tumors of the prostate in patients of various ages (from 6 months to 74 years) who underwent different examinations including pelvic CT/MRI with intravenous contrast enhancement and treatment at the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology are described. The imaging appearance of the identified tumors in all 5 patients as large, heterogeneous, solid masses with fairly distinct, smooth or wavy contours had no characteristic features (before and after intravenous contrast enhancement), which did not allow us to specify the nature of the tumor process. Conclusion : accurate recognition of rare mesenchymal neoplasms of the prostate using various radiological methods is extremely difficult and practically impossible; therefore, the final diagnosis of such lesions should be based on histological and immunohistochemical data.
