Abstract

Lodging limits oat yield, forage value, silage quality, and mechanized harvesting, but resistance cannot be explained by plant height alone. This structured narrative review synthesizes literature available through 1 June 2026 using a tiered evidence framework. After duplicate removal, the review included 119 unique references in total. These comprised 12 Level I studies with direct oat evidence, 30 Level II oat-focused studies requiring further validation, and 77 Level III comparative sources. Overall, 42 sources (35.3%) focused on oat or Avena. The strongest direct evidence supports roles for basal-internode geometry and mechanics, cell-wall composition, canopy architecture, planting density, nitrogen management, and genotype-specific responses to plant growth regulators. However, the direction and magnitude of these effects depend strongly on genotype × management × environment interactions. Evidence for root lodging remains limited because root traits are rarely examined together with direct anchorage measurements and soil mechanical properties. Image-based phenotyping also lacks independently validated, multi-environment oat datasets for model development. Genome-wide association studies and multi-omics analyses have identified candidate loci, genes, and pathways, but independent, homoeolog-aware validation is still needed. We recommend standardized reporting of lodging type, field severity, basal-internode mechanics, root–soil conditions, and imaging protocols. We also propose resource-matched deployment and staged priorities, from phenotyping harmonization to multi-environment validation and causal analysis of belowground mechanisms.

Unravelling trait-mediated effects of genotype and companion planting system on oilseed rape performance

Beyond its contribution to pest regulation and despite contrasting effects on plant traits throughout development, OSR-FB companion planting demonstrated agronomic viability by promoting OSR adaptive responses that maintained productivity under field conditions.

Lignin Content Alone Does Not Determine Lodging Resistance in Forage Sorghum: Roles of Stem Anatomy and Divergent Accessions

Forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) has excellent stress resistance and feeding quality. Lodging is one of the most critical factors influencing its yield and overall quality. However, there remains no definitive conclusion regarding the key indicators affecting the lodging of forage sorghum and their correlat...

Fertiliser Responses in Amaranthus blitum subsp. oleraceus and African Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.): A Comparative Critical Review with Evidence from Related Vegetable Amaranths

Fertiliser management in leafy amaranths and African marigold is frequently discussed as if greater nutrient supply produces a simple, transferable increase in crop performance. The evidence is more conditional. This critical narrative review compares mineral, organic, integrated and biological nutrient strategies rele...

From Neglected to Next-Generation Crops: Breeding and Omics-Based Improvement of Underutilised Legumes

Evidence on the breeding and omics-based improvement of underutilised legumes is synthesised, identifying a persistent disconnection between genomic resource generation, downstream trait validation, breeding pipeline integration and farmer-level variety release.

Agronomic and Physiological Responses of ‘Chardonnay’ Grapevines to Management Strategies with Late Pruning and Late Cane Tying

To mitigate the potential drawbacks of late pruning, this study evaluated an alternative approach utilising the anatomical features of the umbrella trellis system, cane pruning, and apical dominance. Vine canes were tied at four distinct phenological stages: before budburst, at the 3-leaf, 5-leaf, and 7-leaf stages (BB...

Genetic legacy effects in a mungbean-wheat rotation reveal potential to breed for system-level yield gains.

Legume crops provide protein-rich food, critical disease breaks in cereal rotations, and contribute to soil fertility through symbiotic nitrogen fixation. However, crop improvement programs typically focus on within-crop performance rather than system-level benefits. We hypothesise that legacy effects (the influence of...
