Abstract

Incubation efficiency and chick health are fundamentally linked to fertile egg quality, which is influenced by both grading methods and breeder age. This study evaluated the effects of manual versus automated grading and Cobb breeder age (28–42, 43–56, and 57–70 weeks) on hatchability, chick quality, and embryonic mortality. The study was conducted in a commercial hatchery and a total of 54,432 fertile eggs were incubated and distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 3 factorial scheme (two sorting methods × three age groups). Egg quality was first assessed by identifying cracked, dirty, inverted, and rejected eggs. Post-incubation, the study evaluated hatchability and chick quality (categorized into first and second grades). A detailed embryo diagnosis was performed to determine the incidence of rejects, embryonic mortality by stage, and the presence of live or dead pecked eggs. Data were statistically analyzed to evaluate the influence of classification methods and breeder age on key production performance indicators. This study revealed that breeder age significantly affected hatchability and incubation performance. Younger breeder hens demonstrated higher hatchability rates, whereas eggs from older breeder hens exhibited reduced incubation efficiency. In contrast, automated and manual grading systems showed comparable hatchability performance, with no significant differences observed between classification methods. These findings indicate that automated grading may be applied without negatively affecting hatchability outcomes across different breeder age groups.

Effect of preheating fertile eggs on hatchability parameters of Ross AP950 heavy broiler breeders

This study assessed the effect of preheating fertile eggs from Ross AP950 heavy broiler breeders on hatchability parameters. In a completely randomized design (CRD), 83,160 fertile eggs were divided into three experimental treatments: no preheating (T0), preheating at 28 °C for 4 hours (T1), and preheating at 28 °C for...

The Effect of Age of Laying Hens on Egg Composition and Egg Quality in Close Housing System

The impact of age on egg composition and quality in commercial laying hens was investigated. Data regarding egg production were collected from a flock of 1,002 laying hens (comprising 334 cages) between 26 and 58 weeks of age. Twenty eggs were randomly collected from 20 cages monthly over 8 months on 9 sampling occasio...

The effects of incubation green lighting on hatchability, chick length, and chick weight in broiler chickens: a meta-analysis

Green light stimulation during incubation is a potential strategy for enhancing hatching traits. However, findings across studies remain inconsistent. Therefore, this meta-analysis evaluated the impact of green light exposure during incubation on chick length, hatchability of fertile eggs, and chick weight in broiler c...

Impact of hatchery microclimate, breeder age and storage time on egg water loss in a tropical climate

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of incubator microclimate, broiler breeder age, and fertile egg storage duration on egg water loss in a commercial hatchery within a tropical climate. Data were collected from the environments (air-conditioned egg room and incubator) in order to perform microclimatic assessments...
