Internalization of Student Discipline Character Through Programmatic Habituation in Elementary Education

Abstract

This study aims to describe the internalization process of elementary students' discipline character through programmatic habituation integrated into Pancasila Education learning and co-curricular activities. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed at SD IT Al Izzah, South Tangerang City, Banten Province, involving six informants: the school principal, two Grade II teachers, and three Grade II students. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, with trustworthiness established through source and technique triangulation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings indicate that discipline internalization unfolded through three sequential stages: external compliance, habituation, and internalized self-awareness, reflected in students' increasing punctuality, responsibility, and orderliness performed without repeated teacher direction. This progression was jointly supported by classroom routines within Pancasila Education learning and by co-curricular components comprising a religious program (congregational Dhuha prayer), a time-zone system, and active student participation, which operated interdependently rather than in isolation. Teacher consistency in modeling disciplined behavior emerged as the most influential supporting factor, while differing individual adaptation among students and limited continuity between school and home environments constituted the principal inhibiting factors. The study concludes that discipline character is not formed instantly but develops through sustained, systematically integrated habituation across curricular and co-curricular settings. These findings offer a contextual, integrative model of discipline internalization that can serve as a practical reference for elementary schools seeking to strengthen character education through coherent, school-wide habituation programs involving teachers, structured routines, and family engagement.
