Abstract

ABSTRACT This study unravels the articulation of environmental crises in 13 Indonesian newspaper short stories published between 2023 and 2025 through Greg Garrard’s ecocriticism framework. The study aims to describe and analyze the representation of ecological issues based on the tropes of pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, and animals, in order to deconstruct anthropocentric perspectives in literature. The corpus was selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria regarding the sufficiency of contemporary environmental crisis discourses in national and regional print media. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach with note-taking techniques and descriptive-interpretive analysis, 28 textual data units were identified, demonstrating the dominance of the apocalypse category with 10 data units (35.7%) manifesting in floods, landslides, abrasion, and extreme droughts. The pollution category comprises 7 data units (25.0%) representing haze exposure and industrial residues, wilderness accounts for 5 data units (17.9%) related to deforestation and forest exploitation, while animals includes 4 data units (14.3%) regarding habitat fragmentation and threats of species extinction. In addition, 2 data units (7.1%) emerged as additional findings depicting mangrove restoration efforts and indigenous area protection. These findings reinforce the position of newspaper short stories as reflective spaces that potentially foster public ecological awareness, while simultaneously enriching the integration of fiction into Indonesian language pedagogy.
