Abstract
The Tana Toraja District in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, is distinguished by its varied topography, including valleys and mountains. The dryland soils in this region are predominantly sandy to light loam and are characterized by low organic matter and fertility. Soil macrofauna are integral to enhancing soil physical properties and nutrient cycling, whereas topographic factors such as slope affect their diversity through processes such as erosion, drainage, and soil moisture conditions. This study aimed to examine the abundance and diversity of soil macrofauna in relation to the physical and chemical properties of soil within the dryland agroecosystems of Rante Village, Makale Subdistrict. Eight macrofauna groups were identified, with Formicidae being the dominant group. The diversity index ranged from 0.59 to 1.33, indicating a generally moderate diversity. Soil pH (4.71–6.46) and bulk density (1.05–1.34 g cm−3) varied across sites, while C-organic (0.68–3.18%) was low to high and N-total (0.13–0.32%) was low to moderate. Macrofauna abundance showed strong positive correlations with pH (r = 0.71) and bulk density (r = 0.67), whereas diversity was negatively correlated with C-organic (r = –0.64). However, ANOVA indicated no significant simultaneous effects of soil factors (P-value > 0.05). These findings suggest that soil physicochemical properties contribute to shaping macrofauna abundance in tropical drylands, while diversity patterns are influenced by more complex environmental interactions.
The Philippines is known for its archipelagic geography and tropical climate, which support a wide range of organisms. However, determining the relationship between soil physicochemical properties and tree diversity in agricultural landscapes has been less explored. This study assessed whether soil physicochemical char...

Homegarden agroforestry systems support soil biodiversity and nutrient cycling, yet seasonal variation in soil macrofauna remains insufficiently documented in northern Ethiopia. This study evaluated seasonal variation in soil macrofauna abundance, biomass, diversity, and selected soil physical and chemical properties i...

Wild plant populations in mountain ecosystems often depend on specific combinations of soil, vegetation and microsite conditions. Alcea nudiflora (Lindl.) Boiss. is a poorly studied Malvaceae species in Central Asia, and its population structure across different soil and vegetation conditions in the Trans-Ili Alatau re...

Soil macroinvertebrates mediate key soil processes, but field evidence is scarce in coastal Neotropical pastures. This study evaluated how soil physicochemical properties covary with macroinvertebrate abundance and diversity in tropical pastures of Manabí, Ecuador. Thirty-five cattle farms, seven per locality, were sam...

Soil in mountainous regions is vital to the health and preservation of these unique and diverse ecosystems. In dry and semi-arid regions, vegetation patches play a crucial role in soil nutrient heterogeneity through continuous feedback with soils, acting as barriers to collect runoff water, sediments, and nutrients fro...

This study assessed soil macrofaunal and microbial diversity in a date palm plantation at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Nigeria, within the Sudan-Guinea savannah transition zone. Macrofauna were sampled using 20 m × 20 m plots with 1 m² quadrats at 0–40 cm depth, while microbial isolates were obtained through serial...
