Abstract

We clarify some mathematical features of the density of a dilute particle flow on a body surface in a two-fluid model, with a view toward its application to icing simulations. Inviscid solutions in the vicinity of a front stagnation point are obtained in exact and perturbed forms for small and large Stokes numbers, respectively, and the behavior of the density of the dispersed phase is clarified over the entire range of Stokes numbers. The viscous effect of the laminar boundary layer in the carrier phase on the particle-free thin layer appearing in the low-Stokes-number regime is also investigated based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. An order-of-magnitude estimation of the velocity field of the dispersed phase reveals the cause of this layer and the criterion for its appearance. In particular, the latter result provides an improved form of Michael's criterion.

Lateral Migration and Focusing of Inerial Particles in Two-Phase Flows of Boundary-Layer Type

The lifting force exerted on particles in shear flows can significantly affect the admixture distribution in near-wall gas/liquid-particle/droplet flows. For small particle Reynolds numbers based on the relative velocity, shear rate, and particle angular velocity, the expression for the lifting force was first obtained...

On the interactions of a flocking ensemble with the Navier-Stokes flow in an infinite channel

We study the global existence of weak solutions and asymptotic flocking behavior for the Cucker-Smale-Navier-Stokes (CS-NS) system in an infinitely long cylindrical domain under no-slip and specular reflection boundary conditions. This coupled kinetic-fluid system provides the modeling for the collective dynamics of fl...

Method of viscous dipole domains (VDD) for simulation of three-dimensional flows of viscous incompressible fluid. Physical mechanism of instability

The viscous dipole domains method is a kind of the Lagrangian impulse-particle method using the diffusion velocity method and the particle strength exchange. We prefer to call particles as domains because a particle is associated with a concrete volume of fluid and moves with its velocity. When using diffusion velocity...

Diffusion-driven flow about an impermeable sphere or cylinder in a stably stratified liquid: the singular limit of small Rayleigh numbers

Abstract Content of image described in text. When an impermeable spherical particle is suspended in stably stratified ambient salinity gradient, the curving of the constant-density surfaces gives rise to non-conservative body forces which cannot be supported by pressure gradients. As a result, fluid motion is engendere...

Diffusive Particles Travel Through a Tube in Less Time than the Flowing Fluid in Which They Are Suspended

This article presents a summary of recent theoretical investigations on the residence time distribution (RTD) of particles in laminar flow tubes based on the stochastic simulation of particles trajectories and on a formerly unpublished comparison of the numerical simulation results with experimental data. The RTD depen...
