TL;DR

Hatching time analysis showed that reproduction mainly occurred in summer and autumn, with a peak in October, indicating that these months represent the main recruitment period of Chelon saliens juveniles in the Çardak Lagoon.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the early life biological characteristics of Chelon saliens juveniles in the Çardak Lagoon, including growth patterns, size structure, recruitment dynamics, and temporal distribution. A total of 362 individuals were collected monthly between September 2024 and August 2025 using a beach seine net. Total length ranged from 1.5 to 10.5 cm, with a mean length of 3.7 ± 1.6 cm, and the 2–3 cm size class was the most dominant. The highest abundance was recorded in September (n = 127) and October (n = 114), indicating that these months represent the main recruitment period. The length–weight relationship was estimated as W = 0.011L²·⁸4, indicating negative allometric growth (p < 0.05). Daily age ranged between 20 and 159 days, and the mean daily growth rate was calculated as 0.82 mm/day. The daily mortality coefficient (Z) was estimated at 0.023 day-1. Hatching time analysis showed that reproduction mainly occurred in summer and autumn, with a peak in October. As a study focusing on juvenile population parameters of this species, the current findings provide fundamental information for understanding the early life ecology and biology of the species.

LENGTH–WEIGHT RELATIONSHIP, GROWTH, MORTALITY AND EXPLOITATION STATUS OF SEPIA HIERREDDA (RANG, 1835) IN IVORIAN WATERS, GULF OF GUINEA

Population parameters of the giant African cuttlefish Sepia hierredda were estimated from length-frequency data collected in Ivorian waters. A total of 962 individuals were measured. The asymptotic length (L∞) was 32.03 cm and the growth coefficient (K) was 0.69 year-1, giving a growth performance (φ’) of 2.85. The len...

Population structure, temporal allometry status of Neotrapezium sublaevigatum (Lamarck, 1819) (Family: Trapezidae) in the Vellar estuary, India

Seasonal variation in growth and condition of Neotrapezium sublaevigatum was investigated in the Vellar estuary from August 2024 to July 2025. A total of 926 individuals were examined to evaluate shell morphometry, length–weight relationships, size–frequency distribution, and condition indices across pre-monsoon, monso...

Study of length-weight relationship and relative condition factor of Epinephelus tauvina (Forsskal, 1775) from Veraval Coast of Gujarat, India

The study of length-weight relationships (LWR) in fish species is crucial for understanding their growth patterns, health status, and for effective fisheries management. Epinephelus tauvina (Forsskal, 1775), commonly known as the greasy grouper, is an important commercial species along the southwest coast of India, par...
