Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop models for assessing the effectiveness of innovative projects in the agricultural sector. The paper demonstrates that traditional approaches to investment appraisal, based on discounting, do not provide a complete picture of the impact of research and development expenses on key financial indicators. Using econometric analysis of data from 95 biotechnology companies operating in international markets, regression models were constructed linking RD expenditures to revenue and net profit. It was found that an increase in costs by $1 million is accompanied by an average increase in revenue of $4.12 million and net profit of $0.856 million. Polynomial models demonstrate higher accuracy for profit. An inverse relationship was also identified between the share of RD expenditures in revenue and the level of profitability, which made it possible to substantiate a range of optimal values from 27% to 65% of revenue. A procedure for applying the obtained dependencies in the formation of regional programs and project portfolios is proposed. Scientific developments are useful for agricultural management bodies for use in strategic planning of innovative development.
