Abstract
Abstract Objective Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent spontaneous seizures due to excessive brain electrical activity. Identifying factors associated with seizure recurrence may help improve patient's management. This study aims to identify factors associated with recurrent spontaneous seizures in epilepsy patients. Method This study was an analytical cross-sectional study with consecutive samples of epilepsy patients at Sanjiwani Gianyar Regional General Hospital. Data were collected through structured patient interviews and review medical records, capturing demographic characteristics, clinical history, and seizure-related variables. Samples were classified into two groups based on the presence or absence of seizure recurrence within the past year. Comparative analysis between groups was conducted using the Chi-square test. Results A total of 41 samples were obtained: 21 from the group without seizures and 20 from the group with seizures. Of several variables, those associated with recurrent spontaneous seizures were electroencephalography (EEG) results ( p = 0.012), history of status epilepticus ( p = 0.048), seizures during sleep ( p = 0.020), and recurrent seizures within the first 3 months after the first seizure ( p <0.001). Conclusion Recurrent spontaneous seizures in epilepsy patients are associated with EEG findings, history of status epilepticus, seizures during sleep, and recurrent seizures within the first 3 months after the first seizure. Within the limitations of this study, EEG abnormalities appear to be associated with seizure recurrence. These findings are still preliminary and should be interpreted with caution.
Focal seizures are the predominant type of seizure among pediatric patients and are primarily managed with benzodiazepines such as clobazam and lorazepam, followed by levetiracetam.

Overall, the presence of SCSs alone was not associated with a poor outcome, but the spatial non-concordance with the seizure-onset zone was highly predictive for poor seizure outcome.

Introduction: epilepsy is a condition characterised by recurrent seizures which are 24 hours apart. Eighty per cent of global cases are found in Low-and-Middle Income Countries.
Methods: an analytical cross-sectional study design was adopted for this study. A total of 185 adult epileptic patients were recruited between June and September 2023 at the neurology clinic of the Kenyatta National Hospital. Participants were interviewed, and medical records were reviewed. Multivariable logistic regression was carried out to identify factors associated with uncontrolled seizures. The level of significance was set at P<.05.
Results: oral carbamazepine was the most prescribed antiepileptic drug (AED) followed by sodium valproate and levetiracetam. Only 71(38.4%) participants were adherent to their antiepileptic drugs. Participants with at least one seizure in the past year were considered to have uncontrolled seizures 128(69.2%). Factors associated with uncontrolled seizures were non-adherence to antiepileptic drugs (aOR = 2.56, 95% CI: 1.21 - 5.42; P=.01), treatment with phenobarbitone (aOR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.18 - 6.45; P=.02), sodium valproate (aOR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.10 - 2.03; P=.01) or levetiracetam (aOR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.07 - 1.53; P=.01), and head trauma as an aetiology of the first epileptic seizure (aOR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.67 - 0.98; P=.03).
Conclusion: the prevalence of uncontrolled seizures was notably high at 69.6%. The best predictors for uncontrolled seizures in this study included non-adherence to AEDs, treatment with either phenobarbitone, sodium valproate or head trauma as an aetiology of the first epileptic seizure.

Background: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Sleep disturbances may increase seizure recurrence, yet evidence on their association remains limited, particularly in Indonesia.
Objective: This study aimed to analyze the association between sleep quality and seizure recurrence, as well as its correlation with seizure frequency among patients with epilepsy.
Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional framework. The study participants were patients with epilepsy who met the predefined inclusion criteria. Data regarding sleep quality, sleep patterns, and excessive daytime sleepiness were collected using validated questionnaire instruments, while seizure recurrence data were obtained from patients’ clinical histories.
Results: A total of 34 patients were included in the analysis. Poor sleep patterns were significantly associated with seizure recurrence (p < 0.001; OR = 75.0; 95% CI: 6.99–805.23), although the wide confidence interval indicates uncertainty due to the small sample size. Excessive daytime sleepiness was not significantly associated with seizure recurrence (p = 0.078). Sleep patterns showed a strong correlation with seizure frequency (r = 0.807; p < 0.001), while excessive daytime sleepiness demonstrated a moderate correlation (r = 0.456; p = 0.007). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) demonstrated good discriminatory ability for seizure recurrence (AUC = 0.931; cut-off value ≥5).
Conclusion: Poor sleep quality is significantly associated with seizure recurrence and increased seizure frequency among patients with epilepsy. Routine screening using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) with a cut-off value of ≥5 may support seizure management and requires further validation through longitudinal studies.

SCSs are present in approximately one quarter of presurgical epilepsy patients and show moderate concordance with CS and IED localization and their distinct localization profile and frequent containment within CS zones support their value as complementary information in epilepsy care.

Objective: To investigate predictive factors for seizure recurrence in children with febrile seizures (FS) within a single febrile illness, providing a basis for early clinical identification and preventive measures. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of children with FS admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, Suzhou Hospital Affiliated to Anhui Medical University, from April 2023 to December 2025. A total of 337 children met the inclusion criteria. Children with more than one seizure within the same febrile ilness were classified as the recurrent febrile seizures (RFS) group, and those with a single seizure as the non-recurrent febrile seizures (NRFS) group. Univariate and multivariate analyses identified factors associated with FS recurrence. A predictive model was constructed, and its performance was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: Among the 337 children, 42 were in the RFS group and 295 in the NRFS group. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that a family history of FS in first-degree relatives (OR = 2.853, 95% CI: 1.400-5.817, P = 0.004), body temperature at the first seizure (OR = 0.214, 95% CI: 0.099-0.465, P < 0.001), and serum potassium level (OR = 2.934, 95% CI: 1.227-7.014, P = 0.015) were independent risk factors for RFS. The predictive model demonstrated good discriminatory ability, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.808 (95% CI: 0.746-0.869), a sensitivity of 71.4%, and a specificity of 75.7%. Conclusion: A positive family history of FS in first-degree relatives, a lower body temperature at the first seizure, and a higher serum potassium level are significant predictors of FS recurrence. Combining these indicators into a predictive model can effectively identify children at high risk of recurrence, offering a reference for early clinical intervention.
