Abstract

: The INEP databases with Higher Education Trajectory Indicators between 2010 and 2024 were analyzed for Brazilian bachelor’s degree courses in Engineering. For each year, INEP provided an individualized spreadsheet with 32 variables presenting a cohort analysis portraying the Completion, Dropout, and Retention Rates in the courses. A business intelligence system was built able to provide both the data concatenation and its distinct breakdowns. These breakdowns led to the following conclusions: A large variation in the number of new students was observed between 2010 and 2020; however, the completion rates, after 10 years of enrollment, remain stable, at a level of approximately 37%. In 2010, students enrolled in distance learning engineering programs represented less than 2% of those enrolled in on-campus programs, growing to approximately 40% in 2020. However, the average graduation rate after 10 years of study for distance learning remained around 13%. The average graduation rates for public institutions are higher than the national average, differing between state, federal, and municipal institutions. For private institutions, the average graduation rate after 10 years of study was 32%. Although private non-profit institutions lost ground in terms of enrollment numbers between 2010 and 2020, they achieved an average cumulative graduation rate of approximately 35%.
