Abstract
This study explores how Chinese university students enhance their intercultural competence (IC) through internationalization at home (IaH) experiences. Utilizing Process Model of Intercultural Competence (PMIC), the qualitative research involved 26 students from three Chinese universities. Findings reveal that IaH experiences—including foreign language education, international curriculum, and engagement with international students and scholars—positively influence IC development. Students demonstrated notable growth in their openness, cultural knowledge, communication skills, adaptability and ethnorelative view, and effective communication through appropriate behaviors. The research highlights local traits, including increased confidence in intercultural communication and the establishment of relationships such as friendship in China. It also reflects on IaH experiences in China, particularly the challenges of virtual internationalization. Ultimately, this study contributes valuable insights into the impact of IaH experiences on IC development. It also underscores the necessity of enhancing IaH strategies for domestic university students in China and beyond.
