Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soil poses a serious threat to food safety and soil quality. Although organic and inorganic amendments show promise for Cd remediation, the temporal dynamics of their combined effects on soil biochemical processes and Cd bioavailability remain poorly understood. A two-year pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of green manure (GM), rice straw (RS), and lime (L) applied alone or in combination on Cd immobilization and rice yield in Cd-contaminated paddy soil. GM, RS, and lime combined treatment (GSL) significantly increased grain yield by 58.4% and 53.5% and reduced grain Cd concentration by 40.5% and 42.8% in 2020 and 2021, respectively, compared with chemical fertilizer application alone. GSL treatment decreased the acid-extractable Cd fraction by 25.5% and increased the residual fraction by 71.1% in 2021. Root Fe-Mn plaque increased by 52.2%-71.8% under GSL, limiting Cd translocation to aerial tissues. Partial least squares path modelling revealed a shift in the controlling mechanism between seasons: Cd fractions directly controlled grain Cd in 2020, whereas Fe-Mn plaque became dominant in 2021. The combined use of organic amendments with lime is therefore a promising strategy for strengthening lime-based remediation in Cd-contaminated paddy systems.

Effects of Wood Vinegar Application and Planting Density on Cadmium Uptake and Accumulation in a Maize–Wheat Rotation System Under Straw Removal Management

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soils threatens food safety and human health. To address this issue, wood vinegar (WV) and high-density planting were combined in our field study. The results revealed that the combined application significantly increased maize (Zea mays) grain and straw biomass while enhancin...

One-time calcium carbonate versus annual lime application for cadmium immobilization in a contaminated paddy field: A four-year field study.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy fields poses a serious threat to food security. However, the comparative remediation efficiency and microbial community responses of one-time calcium carbonate versus annual lime application remain unclear. A four-year field experiment (2021-2024) was conducted in Zhuzhou, China, usi...

Alleviation of lead toxicity and enhancement of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield and antioxidant capacity using silicon and humic acid amendments in contaminated soil

Lead (Pb) contaminates agricultural soils, endangering human health, plant life, and the global food supply. Several strategies have been explored to mitigate Pb toxicity. Silicon (Si) can be used to increase crop production and sustain crop growth under heavy-metal stress. A field trial was conducted to assess the inf...

Effects of Various Straw Return Strategies on Selenium and Cadmium Accumulation in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Under Field Conditions

The widespread co-occurrence of elevated selenium (Se) and cadmium (Cd) in paddy soils presents a dual challenge of maximizing agronomic Se biofortification while simultaneously mitigating Cd toxic risks. Although straw return is a prevalent agricultural management practice, its specific impacts on the bioavailability...

Enhanced Se enrichment and Cd reduction in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by Zr-Mn bimetallic modified biochar in Se-rich and Cd-contaminated soil.

The development of effective amendments for the safe cultivation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in selenium-cadmium co-contaminated paddy soils poses a significant challenge. This study synthesized a novel Zr-Mn bimetallic modified peanut shell biochar (ZM@PSB) and evaluate its effects on soil health and the accumulation of...

Effects of Hydrochar Application on Soil Cadmium Immobilisation and Foxtail Millet Growth

Cadmium (Cd) not only significantly threatens crop growth and food safety but also degrades soil quality and reduces microbial activity. Hydrochar is a carbon-rich material derived from biomass via hydrothermal carbonisation, due to its large specific surface area and abundant surface functional groups, shows great pot...
