Resilience Supply Chain with Industry 4.0 and Human Innovation in VUCA Environments: A Review

Oct 2026 · International Journal of Maritime Engineering · 0 citations

Abstract

The implementation of industry 4.0 technologies plays a crucial role in enhancing supply chain resilience and organizational  performance. The volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment presents significant challenges for industrialists, necessitating the collabo-ration of human intelligence and innovation. Industry 4.0 techniques have the potential to disrupt the existing supply chain system for better flexibility, agility, and risk management despite the result being scattered in different literature sources, the comprehensive analysis not being available, and the research being inefficient, antiquated, deterministic, and insensitive to the definitions of industry 4.0 concepts for supply chain risk and for the VUCA business environment. The literature between the years 2005 and 2025 was extracted from the world’s top sources using the rigorous application of the SLR. A final sample of 46 high-quality studies was analysed to determine essential resilience enablers, obstacles, critical success factors, and technology-driven strategies. The findings demonstrate that digital technologies such as block chain, big data analysis, AI, as well as the Internet of Things make supply chains much more resilient by improving real-time visibility, predictive capabilities, collaboration, and risk management. A structured transition framework for industry 4.0 adoption is proposed to assist organizations in developing resilient supply chains in VUCA conditions, based on the synthesized evidence. The research enhances theoretical understanding by integrating disparate knowledge and provides practical, actionable insights for policymakers along with managers.
