The Role of Environmental Management Accounting in the Sustainable Development of Companies
Abstract
Environmental issues have become a growing concern for many countries. Traditional management accounting practices do not deliver the information required for environmental management. To address this, Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) has received significant attention. By reviewing the specialized literature, this paper aims to investigate the role of environmental management accounting in reducing the negative impact of companies on the environment and highlights the need for its implementation within these companies. The main categories of environmentally oriented costs are highlighted, as well as the EMA methods and tools developed. The paper concludes with the authors' conclusions related to the implementation of EMA within companies. The study contributes to theoretical development in the field of management accounting and can be used to develop an environmental management accounting system, aiming at the efficient use of natural resources and the reduction of waste and emissions, with an impact on the sustainable development of the business.
