Abstract

The shape of a number field $K$ of degree $n\geq2$ is the similarity class of the lattice obtained by projecting $\mathscr{O}_K$ orthogonally away from the rational line in Minkowski space. It defines a point in the space of shapes of rank-$(n-1)$ lattices, $\mathscr{S}_{n-1}:=\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R})/\mathrm{GO}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R})$, where $\mathrm{GO}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R})$ is the group of orthogonal similitudes. Let $G$ be a fixed nontrivial finite abelian group, and let $K/\mathbb{Q}$ vary over tamely ramified Galois extensions with Galois group isomorphic to $G$. We study the variation of the shapes of such number fields in $\mathscr S_{n-1}$, where $n=|G|$.

The rational homology of quotients of the curve complex

Let $\mathop{Mod}_{g,n}$ be the mapping class group of a genus-$g$ surface with $n$ punctures and let $\mathcal{C}_{g,n}$ be its curve complex. For a finite-index subgroup $G<\mathop{Mod}_{g,n}$, Boggi proved that $\widetilde{H}_k(\mathcal{C}_{g,n}/G;\mathbb{Q}) = 0$ for $g+n \gg k$. This plays an important role in the...

The universal valued Abelian groups of Niemiec are L\'{e}vy, strongly exotic, extremely amenable, and $\mathbb{G}_r(0)$ is generically monothetic

We prove various properties of the universal valued Abelian groups $\mathbb{G}_r(N)$ constructed by Niemiec, for $r\in\{1,\infty\}$ and $N\in\{0,2,3,\ldots\}$. First we show that the completion of $\Gamma_0=\bigoplus_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ (for $N=0$) or $\Gamma_N=\bigoplus_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\mathbb{Z}/N\...

The fields generated by character values of linear and unitary groups

For a finite group $G$, define the field $\mathbb{Q}(G) := \mathbb{Q}(\{\chi(g) : \chi \in \operatorname{Irr}(G) , g \in G\})$. In this article we compute generating sets for the fields $\mathbb{Q}(G)$ when $G$ is a finite general or special linear group, a finite general or special unitary group, or one of the simple...

Range-compatible homomorphisms on Hermitian matrices

Let $\mathbb{D}$ be a division ring with an involution $x \mapsto x^\star$, and $n \geq 2$ be an integer. Denote by $\mathcal{H}_n(\mathbb{D})$ the set of all $n$-by-$n$ Hermitian matrices with entries in $\mathbb{D}$, and by $\mathcal{A}\mathcal{H}_n(\mathbb{D})$ the set of all matrices $A-A^\star$ with $A \in \mathca...

On the residual polynilpotence of tree products of groups with locally cyclic edge subgroups

Let $\mathcal{N}$ be a non-empty class of nilpotent groups closed under taking subgroups, quotient groups, finite direct products, and unrestricted direct powers of the form $\prod_{x \in X}Y_{x}$, where $X \in \mathcal{N}$ and $Y_{x}$ ($x \in X$) are isomorphic copies of a group $Y \in \mathcal{N}$. Logarithm of the Universal Two-Valued Formal Group

We solve the long-standing problem of determining the exact denominators of the coefficients of the logarithm $B(x)=x+\sum_{n\geq1}b_nx^{n+1}$, obtained from the universal formal group of complex cobordism by the modulus square construction: $$ b_n=\frac{C_n}{d_n},\qquad d_n=\frac{n+1}{2}\operatorname{lcm}(1,\ldots,2n+...
