Abstract

Let $X_N(t)$, $t\in[0,\pi]$, be a stationary Gaussian trigonometric polynomial, and let $\mathcal Z_N$ denote the number of zeros of the rescaled process $X_N(t/N)$ on $[0,N\pi]$. We establish the quantitative central limit theorem \[ d_{\mathrm W}\left( \frac{\mathcal Z_N-\mathbb E[\mathcal Z_N]} {\sqrt{\operatorname{Var}(\mathcal Z_N)}},Z\right) \le C\frac{(\log N)^2}{\sqrt N}, \] where $Z$ is standard Gaussian and $d_{\mathrm W}$ denotes the Wasserstein-1 distance. The proof combines Ornstein--Uhlenbeck regularization of the singular Kac representation with direct estimates of the covariance between the Malliavin--Stein factor and Stein test functions. A lattice lower bound of order $N^{-1/2}$ shows that the convergence rate is optimal up to logarithmic factors.

On exponential sums with multiplicative coefficients

Let $f:\mathbb{N}\to{z\in\mathbb{C}:|z|\leq1}$ be multiplicative, and suppose that $\alpha$ has a rational approximation $a/q$ with $|\alpha-a/q|\leq 1/(qx)$ and $q\leq x/((\log x)^2(\log\log x)^3)$. We prove that $\left|\sum_{n\leq x}f(n)e(n\alpha)\right|\leq \left(\frac4{\sqrt6}+o(1)\right)\frac{x}{\sqrt q} +O\left(\...

Linear independence of values of polylogarithms with periodic coefficients, outside the disk of convergence

For any non-zero periodic function f\,: Z $\rightarrow$ C of period N ___ 1 and any non-zero algebraic number z\_0 that doesn't lie on a half-line [e^2i${\ell}$$\pi$/N , e^2i${\ell}$$\pi$/N $\infty$[, 0 ___ ${\ell}$ ___ N -1, we give a lower bound of order sqrt{s/log(s)} on the dimension of the Q(z\_0 )-vector space sp...

Stochastic Domination of Gaussian Maxima by the Regular Simplex

Let $n\ge2$, and let $X=(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ be a centered Gaussian vector with $\mathrm{Var}(X_i)=1$ for every $i$. Let $Z_1,\ldots,Z_n$ be independent standard Gaussians, and put $\overline{Z}=(Z_1+\cdots+Z_n)/n$. We prove $\mathbb{P}\{\max_i X_i\le t\}\ge\mathbb{P}\{\sqrt{n/(n-1)}\,\max_i(Z_i-\overline{Z})\le t\}$ for...

Sharp singularity asymptotics for discrete random matrices

We resolve the Rademacher singularity conjecture: an $n\times n$ matrix with independent uniform $\{-1,1\}$ entries is singular with probability $(2+o(1))n^22^{-n}$. More generally, for an $n\times n$ matrix $M_n$ with independent entries uniform on a fixed set $S\subset\mathbb{R}$ of cardinality $q\ge2$, we prove $\ma...

Global universality of the expected number of zeros of non-analytic random signals

We study the asymptotics as $n$ goes to infinity of $\mathbb E\left[\mathcal{N}(S_n,[0,2\pi])\right]$, the expected number of zeros in $[0, 2\pi]$ of a random periodic signal $S_n$ of the form \[ S_n(t)=\sum_{k=1}^{n}a_k f(kt), \] where $f$ is a non-analytic $2\pi-$periodic function and the coefficients $(a_k)$ are i.i...
