Abstract
The activation of inert C(sp3)-H bonds is the rate-determining step in photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene, and the easy over-oxidation of target products makes it a great challenge in green organic synthesis. Herein, we report a semi-heterogeneous CeClx-NHPI complex, which is constructed via the coordination of CeCl3 and N-Hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) for the efficient visible-light-driven selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde under ambient conditions. Impressively, the catalyst achieved a maximum benzaldehyde formation rate of up to 2 mmol·g-1·h-1 in 5 h, with a benzaldehyde selectivity of 80.6%. Mechanistic studies show that the chlorine radicals (Cl·) generated from the coordinated Ce─Cl bond via the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) process, and the phthalimide-N-oxyl (PINO) radicals formed from NHPI via single-electron transfer jointly promote the efficient activation of the inert C(sp3)-H bond in toluene. In addition, the CeClx-NHPI complex exhibits good recyclability and broad substrate tolerance for the selective oxidation of various toluene derivatives. This work provides a novel strategy for the design of efficient rare earth-based semi-heterogeneous photocatalysts for the activation of C(sp3)-H bonds.
Selective oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds remains a longstanding challenge in organic synthesis, especially under environmentally friendly conditions. Conventional strategies typically rely on harsh oxidants or complex catalysts, limiting their sustainability and scalability. Nanobubbles can generate highly reactive specie...
Solar-driven photocatalytic H2O2 production provides a sustainable alternative to the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. However, graphitic carbon nitride (CN) suffers from rapid charge recombination and inefficient activation of molecular oxygen, leading to limited H2O2 production. Herein, we report a Schiff-base...

Broad substrate generality in radical organic synthesis is often limited by the kinetic mismatch between substrate-dependent radical generation and the rapid, nonselective reactivity of highly active radical species. In this study, we report the development of Co2P-loaded carbon nitride (CN) dots as a cocatalyst for WO...
As vital chemical intermediates, lactones are widely utilized in pharmaceutical synthesis and other chemical industry sectors. However, the established synthetic routes for lactones are hampered by harsh reaction conditions and low yields. In this work, highly efficient light-induced lactonization of diols to lactone...
A2B-type P(V)-corroles were synthesized with push-pull meso-aryl substituents to examine their photocatalytic application for C-C bond formation in both batch and flow conditions. The developed protocol requires only 0.25 mol % catalyst to synthesize β-formyl esters in high yields (up to 90%). Remarkably, the reaction...
