Aligned perylene bisimide hydrogels: a 3D printing approach to mechanophotoconductive films

Abstract

Organic electronics often require molecular alignment to facilitate efficient charge transport. However, existing alignment methods (e.g., magnetic alignment, dielectrophoresis, spin coating, and doctor blading) are energy-intensive, incompatible with water-based materials, or wasteful. Here, we demonstrate that extrusion-based 3D printing induces significant shear alignment in aqueous perylene bisimide (PBI) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends, eliminating the need for external fields or incompatible coating techniques. Upon drying, the resultant xerogels retain this alignment, yielding homogeneous, conductive, flexible films. These films exhibit robust mechanophotoresponsive behaviour: bending the aligned fibres to a radius of 45 mm enhanced the photocurrent response by 2.5-fold compared to the unbent state. Furthermore, the films maintained structural integrity over 1000 bending cycles, retaining 50% of their photoresponse. This work establishes 3D printing as an accessible route to fabricate aligned, water-processed organic materials for wearable mechanophotoresponsive applications.

Liquid crystal elastomers by photopolymerization: from chemistry and alignment strategies to 4D printing.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are materials that combine the anisotropy of liquid crystal molecules with the elasticity of lightly crosslinked polymer networks, making them promising for soft actuators. Photopolymerization has emerged as a key route for the design and implementation of LCEs, thanks to its broad chem...

High-resolution 3D printing of modified pullulan elastic hydrogels via solvent-induced shrinkage.

3D-printable hydrogels confront two core bottlenecks: the trade-off among high printing resolution, fabrication efficiency, and structural fidelity, as well as the inherently poor mechanical performance of conventional hydrogel materials. Herein, we fabricated a dual-network photo-crosslinkable pullulan-based hydrogel...

Coaxial Printing Strategy for Fabricating Hydrogel-Based Fiber Sensors with High Flexibility and Consistency

Hydrogel fibers are of great interest in soft bioelectronics due to their miniature size, high flexibility, and excellent compatibility with biological tissues. However, it remains challenging to maintain structural and sensing performance stability during large-scale fabrication. Here, we integrate coaxial extrusion...
