Abstract

We consider an initial value problem for a time-fractional evolution equation in a Hilbert space $X$: $$ \partial_t^{\alpha} (u(t)-a) = Au(t) \qquad \mbox{for $0<t<T$}, $$ where $\partial_t^{\alpha}$ denotes a fractional differential operator of Caputo type with order $0<\alpha<1,$ $u\colon (0,T) \to X,$ $a$ describes an initial value, and $A$, with domain $\mathcal{D}(A),$ is the generator of a contraction C$_0$ semigroup in $X$. We prove a fractional Hille-Yosida theorem characterizing the unique existence of a weak solution for every $a\in X$. We also discuss the unique existence of a strong solution for $a \in \mathcal{D}(A),$ as well as the continuity of weak solutions. Our results are applicable, for example, to time-fractional transport equations and Boltzmann equations. The proofs are mainly based on constructing an approximating sequence of solutions using the Yosida approximation.

Global and nonglobal solutions for an abstract semilinear heat equation

In this paper, we focus on the existence of both global and non-global nonnegative solutions for the abstract semilinear heat equation $u_t - Lu = \sum_{i=1}^k \ell_i(t) f_i(u)$ in $L^p(X, \mu)$. Here $(X,\mu)$ represents a $\sigma$-finite measure space, $L$ is the infinitesimal generator of a sub-Markovian strongly co...

The equivalence of solutions to fractional and logarithmic Helmholtz equations

We show the following equivalence of solutions to general fractional Helmholtz equations: $u$ is a solution to $$A^su=\lambda^su$$ for \textit{some} fixed $00$ if and only if $u$ is a solution to the same equation for \textit{all} $s\neq0$. Furthermore, we show as well that $u$ equivalently solves the logarithmic Helmh...

Large-diffusion dynamics for a planar Neumann heat equation with exponential nonlinearity

We study the Neumann problem $u_t-\varepsilon\Delta u=e^u-1-au\ (a>1)$ on a smooth bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. For the spatially homogeneous problem, $0$ is stable, the positive equilibrium $\xi_a$ is unstable, and solutions starting above $\xi_a$ blow up in finite time. Although finite-time blow-up per...

A Priori Estimates for Singular Fractional Stochastic Burgers Equations

We study the periodic fractional stochastic Burgers equation $(\partial_t+\Lambda^\gamma)u=\partial_x(u^2)+|\partial_x|^{1-\alpha}\xi$, where $1<\gamma\leq 2$ and $\xi$ is space-time white noise. Under the condition $\alpha>\max{(7-4\gamma)/2,(15-8\gamma)/6}$, we establish pathwise $L^1$, energy, and Besov estimates fo...

The divergence set for the wave equation in higher dimensions

It is shown that if $u$ solves the wave equation in $\mathbb{R}^{4+1}$ with initial data $u(\cdot,0) = u_0(\cdot) \in H^s$ and $\partial_tu(\cdot,0) = u_1(\cdot ) \in H^{s-1}$, where $0.5<s \leq 0.55$, then $u(x,t) \to u_0(x)$ and $\partial_tu(x,t) \to u_1(x)$ pointwise as $t \to 0$, for all $x$ outside an exceptional...

No free lunch for continuity of stochastic convolutions

We construct compact, exponentially stable $C_0$-semigroups $S$ on Hilbert spaces $X$ such that, for every $T>0$, the stochastic convolution $U_g(t)=\int_0^t S(t-s)g(s)\,\mathrm{d}\beta_s $ is unbounded on $[0,T]$ with positive probability for some predictable $g\in L^\infty(\Omega;L^2(0,T;X))$, where $\beta$ is a real...
