Surface Inundation Gradients and Lagged Fractional Vegetation Cover Responses of Populus euphratica Oliv. Forests to Ecological Water Conveyance in the Lower Tarim River, China
To quantify the spatial and lagged associations between ecological water conveyance and fractional vegetation cover (FVC) in Populus euphratica Oliv. forests, we integrated Landsat imagery (1995–2025), conveyance records, groundwater observations, and multi-period random forest classifications in the lower Tarim River. Newly formed or expanded surface water was mapped within dynamic annual response windows and characterized by annual surface inundation expansion area, multi-year inundation frequency, and distance from forest pixels to recurrently inundated water surfaces. These metrics were related to FVC using Theil–Sen trends and Lag 0–Lag 3 correlations. After 2010, reservoir releases, annual surface inundation expansion area, and groundwater conditions generally improved. Mean FVC increased by 0.182 percentage points per year, with improvement and degradation interspersed spatially. Relatively low- to moderate-frequency inundation was associated with pronounced positive FVC trends, and FVC improvement was concentrated within 0–0.5 km of recurrently inundated water surfaces. Associations of FVC with reservoir releases, groundwater depth, and annual surface inundation expansion area were strongest after 2–3 years. Together, these surface inundation metrics complement reservoir-release and groundwater records and support spatially differentiated monitoring of FVC changes in P. euphratica forests.
Long-term ecological water conveyance has been implemented to reconnect hyper-arid inland-river corridors, but ecological effectiveness cannot be inferred from delivered water volume alone. We assessed ecohydrological changes in the lower Tarim River from 2000 to 2023 using annual water conveyance records, groundwater...

Multi-temporal satellite data were used to examine changes in aufeis area and spatial configuration in the Chuluut River valley, Mongolia, and to compare seasonal vegetation dynamics among sites with different return frequencies of aufeis. Annual aufeis masks were derived from Landsat imagery for 1986–2025, while veget...

The dynamics of arid inland river basins are closely associated with climate variability and human land-use activities, making long-term monitoring essential for understanding ecological responses and supporting sustainable water resource management. Based on annual fractional vegetation cover (FVC) FVC data from 2000...

Lake area dynamics are sensitive indicators of hydroclimatic variability in cold‐arid regions. We reconstructed lake area changes across the Mongolian Plateau from 1990 to 2025 using Landsat imagery, JRC Global Surface Water, and HydroLAKES, and applied XGBoost and SHAP to examine associations with hydroclimatic, e...
Land use/cover change (LUCC) can alter watershed water balance, while whole-watershed averages may obscure spatial heterogeneity among sub-basins. This study evaluated LUCC-induced hydrological responses in the northern region of Longyou County, Zhejiang Province, China, a subtropical humid hilly area. Land use maps fo...

Vegetation greenness reflects ecosystem responses to climate change and human activities. This study quantified spatiotemporal variation in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in Nyingchi, a representative alpine-gorge region of the Southeastern Qinghai–Xizang Plateau, using the MODIS NDVI for 2004–2024 a...
