Beyond the Mirror - Digital Twins for Human-AI Collaboration in Software Engineering

Abstract
AI is rapidly reshaping software engineering (SE), yet current interaction paradigms centered on isolated prompts and opaque agent behavior remain misaligned with complex, collaborative development processes. Human–AI SE systems must move beyond prompt-centricity toward process-aware, reflexive collaboration. We propose Reflexive Process Digital Twin (R-PDT) as living, process-oriented twins that not only mirror but also interpret and adapt SE activities across humans and AI agents. Unlike existing AI-assisted approaches, R-PDTs shift the unit of interaction from individual tasks to evolving process structures, establishing a shared, persistent representation of intent, context, decisions, and outcomes.
