Detection of extracellular vesicles: size does matter

Unknown authors

TL;DR

Several (combinations of) methods can detect clinically relevant properties of microvesicles and exosomes and should be further explored and validated by comparing measurement results so that accurate, reliable and fast solutions come within reach.

Beyond Exosomes: Biological Properties, Isolation Challenges, and Functional Redefinition of Non-Vesicular Extracellular Nanoparticles (NVEPs)

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have dominated research on intercellular communication for decades. However, the discovery of exomeres in 2018 revealed that conventional exosome preparations contain large quantities of long-overlooked non-membranous nanoparticles. Additional non-vesicular extracellular nanoparticles (NVEP...

STEM CELL-DERIVED EXOSOMES: BIOGENESIS, CHARACTERIZATION, ISOLATION AND PRECONDITIONING

Introduction. Exosomes are nanoscale extracellular vesicles of endosomal origin (approximately 30–150 nm) secreted by almost all cell types, which mediate intercellular communication by carrying proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Because stem cell-derived exosomes reproduce much of the paracrine activity of the parent...

Biomimetic and Natural Exosomes in Drug Delivery: A Critical Review.

Exosomes are biological nanoparticles (30-150 nm) secreted by most eukaryotic cells. They are composed of a lipid bilayer membrane and an inner compartment that stores various cellular components. In recent years, research on exosomes has grown exponentially due to their biocompatibility, low immunogenicity and cytotox...

Research Progress on Extracellular Exosome Isolation and Enrichment Techniques.

BACKGROUND Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles that encapsulate a broad spectrum of bioactive molecules, including proteins, lipids, mRNA, miRNA, lncRNA, and DNA, and are present in various biological fluids, such as blood, saliva, and urine, where they serve as key mediators in intercellular communication and play critica...

Biology and Therapeutic Potential of Exosomes, Targeted Drug Delivery

Exosomes are small vesicles released by various cell types—compounds of a lipid bilayer and surface proteins that facilitate their recognition, direction, and uptake by the target cell. Inside, exosomes contain proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, the composition of which varies depending on the cell of origin. Exosome...
