Abstract
The Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) is the most well‐known elasto‐plastic constitutive model for describing the behavior of unsaturated soils. However, the selection of BBM parameters from laboratory data remains challenging due to the strong coupling and interdependence among the constitutive parameters governing hydro‐mechanical behavior. In this context, the Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies provide a systematic approach for quantifying parameter influence and reducing the dimensionality of calibration problems. This paper presents a sensitivity analysis of the parameters used in the coupled hydro‐mechanical numerical simulation of a suction‐controlled oedometer test for three distinct soils, enabled by a computational framework designed to automatically execute and manage many simulations. The analyses were performed using both exhaustive Full Factorial (FF) designs and reduced Plackett–Burman (PB) matrices. The investigated variables included BBM mechanical parameters and hydraulic parameters, while the response variable was the simulated vertical strain during oedometric loading. The FF analyses were used as reference and PB matrices with different numbers of trials were subsequently assessed regarding their ability to reproduce the patterns obtained from the FF analyses with fewer simulations. The results showed that the soil stiffness parameters

The results demonstrate that DOE methodologies provide an effective and computationally efficient framework for sensitivity assessment and parameter prioritization in coupled hydro‐mechanical simulations involving unsaturated soils.
Understanding and modelling the complex interactions and load redistribution mechanisms of steel structures under fire conditions remains difficult even today. In fact, structural fire safety research and application still lack concrete methods that accurately capture phenomena in structural systems. While large‐scale...

The lack of consensus on appropriate formulations for effective stress, the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC), and the critical-state void ratio has plagued the constitutive modeling of unsaturated soils. This paper presents a numerical parametric investigation of the aforementioned modeling components using a rat...

Accurate identification of constitutive parameters for stone‐column‐reinforced composite foundations is essential for deformation analysis and settlement prediction of clay‐core rockfill dams. However, the parameters of the Duncan‐Chang model are difficult to determine directly under field conditions, whereas convent...

Cohesive soils challenge accurate parameter determination due to time-dependent behavior and sampling sensitivity. The self-boring pressuremeter test (SBPT) minimizes disturbance and offers clear boundary conditions. This study develops an efficient optimization framework to identify parameters of an advanced elastic-v...

In this study, a hydraulic-mechanical coupled model of unsaturated soil considering the effect of time was established based on unsaturated elastic-plastic theory. The model considers not only the influence of the degree of saturation and viscoplastic strain on soil hardening but also that of viscous volumetric str...
