Abstract

A modified gravitational model whose action is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar, the matter Lagrangian density, a scalar field, and its kinetic term is investigated as an extension of the gravitational sector with one additional dynamical degree of freedom. Within this framework, the causal structure of the Li time-machine anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime (Phys. Rev. D 59 (1999) 084016), which supports closed timelike curves (CTCs), is analyzed. The Li geometry remains an exact solution once the scalar field is taken in its additive form on the transverse [Formula: see text] plane, and the corresponding effective matter content is described by an anisotropic fluid whose two distinct principal pressures and single energy density are examined against the four classical energy conditions. We find that the kinetic invariant [Formula: see text] stays non-negative everywhere, that the identity [Formula: see text] cancels the scalar contribution exactly, and that the [Formula: see text]-going observer inside the chronology-violating region sees the same energy density as the static observer. The scalar sector therefore does not supply the negative energy required by Hawking’s chronology-protection conjecture, and the CTCs persist as a feature of the underlying [Formula: see text]-vacuum-like geometry.
