Towards an Integrated 5G-TSN Architecture with 5G Non-Cellular DECT NR+

Abstract

The integration of wireless communication into industrial automation systems is a key enabler for Industry 4.0 applications such as Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), collaborative robotics, and flexible manufacturing. While 5G and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) promise deterministic, low-latency communication, practical deployments often fall short of stringent industrial requirements. In this work, we explore the potential of 5G non-cellular DECT NR+ as an alternative or complementary technology for an integration with TSN. We provide a motivation for its use, outline its technical characteristics, and discuss how it can address current limitations of 5G-TSN systems. Furthermore, we present first measurement results obtained from a hardware testbed that show extremely low Packet-Delay Variation (PDV) in the microsecond level. Finally, we highlight research opportunities towards a unified 3GPP compliant architecture combining TSN with DECT NR+ using the Non-3GPP Inter-Working Function (N3IWF).

A Digital Twin-Enabled Management Framework for Low-Latency and Low-Jitter Wireless TSN

Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) provides guaranteed traffic delivery, making it essential for industrial automation, multimedia, automotive systems, and other areas. Although TSN is well-established in wired networks, wireless systems face extra challenges such as delays, interference, and unstable links. Extending TSN...

Empirical Comparison of Full and Split gNB Architectures in 5G NTN Based on a Laboratory Testbed

Ubiquitous connectivity remains a primary focus for 3GPP, driving the development of 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) to integrate regenerative satellites directly into the network. To this end, 3GPP proposes two on-board architectural approaches: hosting a monolithic Next Generation Node B (gNB) or hosting only the D...

Truly mobile sub-terahertz communications beyond 6G via just-in-time IMU-assisted beam management

Sub-Terahertz (sub-THz) communication is a candidate for beyond-sixth-generation (beyond 6G) networks, promising Terabit-per-second rates at microsecond latencies. However, the highly directional beams required to overcome severe path loss make beam alignment under mobility challenging. Existing reactive in-band and ou...
