Abstract
India’s Digital Rupee initiative marks a transformative leap in the evolution of currency, aiming to modernize financial infrastructure, enhance monetary policy execution, and promote financial inclusion. This paper explores the synergistic integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain Technology in the Digital Rupee ecosystem. It investigates how AI can optimize digital currency operations and how blockchain ensures transparency, security, and decentralization. The study also outlines implementation challenges, regulatory considerations, and future trajectories for India’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). This paper examines the intersection of three transformative technologies — India’s Central Bank Digital Currency (Digital Rupee / e₹), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and blockchain/distributed-ledger technologies — and outlines how their convergence can shape India’s financial ecosystem. It surveys current status and pilots, technical integration approaches, practical use-cases (payments, programmability, AML/KYC, credit scoring, cross-border settlement, microgrants), governance and regulatory implications, risks and mitigations, and a pragmatic policy and implementation roadmap tailored to India’s institutional context. The paper draws on RBI pilots, policy initiatives on AI, and recent market developments to propose a defensible, phased pathway for adoption that balances innovation with financial stability, privacy, and inclusion.
