Abstract

The Kelvin–Helmholtz instability is a fundamental signature of the natural world, manifesting in phenomena ranging from atmospheric clouds to the iconic turbulence of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot. While the linear dynamics of this instability is well-understood, the ultimate fate of the fluid—the final stationary state to which it relaxes—remains a formidable challenge. In this paper, we present a general non-equilibrium statistical mechanics framework that allows us to predict the asymptotic vorticity distribution of a sheared 2D Euler fluid. By constructing a self-consistent ansatz for the solution of the Vlasov equation, we determine the stationary stream function without explicitly solving the time-dependent Euler equations. We demonstrate that the relaxation leads to a population-inverted core, where high-energy states are fully occupied, surrounded by a tenuous halo of vortices in the lower-energy regions of configuration space. This result establishes the core–halo structure as a robust statistical consequence of the system’s evolution, offering a universal framework for understanding the saturation of shear-induced turbulence in inviscid 2D fluids.

Structural reset and non-equilibrium steady states in a dusty plasma under impulsive forcing

This work investigates the response of a vortex-structured dusty plasma to a short, intense perturbation produced by a coaxial plasma jet operated at 1 kV. The jet delivers an impulsive forcing that accelerates dust grains far beyond their thermal velocities, leading to the complete loss of the coherent two-vortex orga...

Supercritical mean--field limit for magnetized Hamiltonian dynamic

The magnetized Vlasov--Poisson equation is a fundamental kinetic model for collisionless plasmas. We establish its quasi-neutral limit in two dimensions in the presence of a spatially inhomogeneous and time-dependent external magnetic field. In the same setting, we also establish the combined mean-field and quasi-neutr...

The Navier–Stokes Equations: A Critical Review of Theory, Computation, Turbulence, and Data-Driven Frontiers

The Navier–Stokes equations describe the motion of viscous fluids and stand at the center of modern fluid mechanics. They also define one of the hardest open problems in mathematics, for the question of whether smooth three-dimensional solutions can develop singularities in finite time remains unresolved. Rotating Weyssenhoff fluids in linearized Einstein-Cartan theory

The Weyssenhoff fluid expands the ordinary perfect-fluid description of general relativity by taking into account the intrinsic spin of its constituent particles. Within the linearized regime of Einstein-Cartan theory, we investigate the exterior geometry produced by isolated slowly rotating Weyssenhoff fluids, i.e., s...

Formation of Trapped Surfaces for the Einstein-Euler System

We prove the formation of trapped surfaces for the Einstein--Euler system in 3+1 dimensions beyond spherical symmetry. We consider smooth characteristic initial data in a short-pulse regime with rapid fluid injection. Starting from initial data containing no trapped surfaces, we obtain two sufficient criteria for trapp...

Generating Kolmogorov spectra and structure functions with a Rosenhead profile trefoil vortex knot

Motivated by recent experimental observations by Matsuzawa et al. (2026) of colliding several vortex rings within a water tank, this paper extends a compact trefoil vortex simulation to later times and generates a persistent ==energy spectrum that obeys Kolmogorov scaling, together with other statistics characteristic...
