Abstract

The solar wind underpins the propagation of interplanetary disturbances and is central to space weather forecasting, with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations providing a key tool for studying its large-scale structures. This work applies the Numerical Path-Preserving Roe (NPP-Roe) scheme to background solar wind modeling to mitigate nonphysical intermediate shocks and spurious convergence associated with the conventional Roe scheme in ideal MHD Riemann problems, which stem from the misrepresentation of Alfvén waves. By correcting Alfvén-related eigenvalues, eigenvectors, wave strengths, and magnetic field orientations, the method preserves the physical property of Alfvén waves, maintaining tangential magnetic field magnitude while allowing directional changes. The scheme’s robustness is first validated using one-dimensional MHD Riemann problem. Three-dimensional simulations of the background solar wind during Carrington Rotation 2203 (CR 2203) are then performed by solving the ideal GLM-MHD equations via a finite volume approach combined with constrained least-squares reconstruction. The results indicate that the NPP-Roe scheme is able to capture the main large-scale coronal and solar wind features, including the radial velocity distribution, plasma density structure, and magnetic-field topology, with overall consistency with observational data. These results suggest that the NPP-Roe scheme is a viable option for global coronal solar wind MHD simulations and may provide a useful numerical framework for representing magnetic structures and discontinuities.

A Numerical Path-preserving and Path-conservative Osher–Solomon Scheme for Solar Wind Simulation

We develop a numerical path-preserving and path-conservative Osher–Solomon scheme (NPP-POS) for steady-state solar-wind simulations within the ideal GLM-MHD framework. The method evaluates the Osher–Solomon interface dissipation through a numerically integrated state-space path and incorporates a numerical path-preserv...

Fast and Differentiable MHD Surrogate for Solar Wind using Neural Operator

Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations provide the complete plasma state of the heliosphere, but their computational cost limits applications requiring repeated model evaluations. We introduce SNOW (Solar Neural Operator for Wind), a fast and differentiable surrogate for global MHD solar wind. SNOW combines a rot...

Numerical schemes and dissipative processes in three-dimensional modeling of post-flare loops and their EUV signatures

Solar flares release magnetic energy into the solar corona and drive the formation of hot post-flare loops, but their thermodynamic evolution depends on both the physical processes included in the model and the numerical scheme used to solve the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. We investigate the formation and evol...

Three-Dimensional Magnetotelluric Forward Modeling in the Mixed Space-Wavenumber Domain with Divergence Correction

Three-dimensional magnetotelluric (MT) forward modeling remains constrained by the difficulty of achieving both high numerical accuracy and computational efficiency. To address this limitation, we propose a mixed space-wavenumber domain method based on coupled equations for the magnetic vector potential and electric sc...

Global solar compressible convection simulations on non-Cartesian mappings

Modeling the global dynamics of the Sun requires numerical frameworks capable of simulating the highly turbulent convective envelope and its coupling with the stable radiative interior. Simulating such spherical domains in standard Cartesian finite-volume codes presents significant topological challenges. The goal is t...
