Interannual Variability of Along‐Strait Flow in the Malacca Strait and Its Dynamics

Abstract

The Malacca Strait (MS) is located between Malay Peninsula and the Sumatra Island. It plays important role as a conduit enabling water exchanged between South China Sea (SCS) and the Andaman Sea (AS). In this study, we formulate a quasi‐steady model for an idealized narrow, constant‐depth channel to estimate the interannual along‐strait flow. While this simplified framework does not fully resolve the complex geometry, shallow bathymetry, and frictionally dominated local dynamics of the Malacca Strait, it is used to capture the first order basin scale response to sea level slope forcing. The results suggest that the along‐strait velocity speed varies interannually from −10 to 20 cm/s (positive northwestward), primarily driven by sea level difference between two sides of the MS. Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), via coastal Kelvin wave propagation, induces interannual sea‐level variability in the northern part of the MS, whereas the mechanisms controlling the interannual signal in the southern MS are less well understood. To determine which side of the MS has dominant influence on the flow, we computed the time‐averaged, depth‐integrated energy flux. The result shows that the flux is negative, indicating dominantly incoming energy from the AS. Since, for long waves, energy is transported in the same direction as wave propagation, we infer that the along‐strait flow is strongly influenced by the remote forcing from the Indian Ocean.

The See‐Saw Radiation of Semidiurnal Internal Tides From the Lesser Sunda Islands

The Lesser Sunda Islands (LSI) form a long chain over 1,000 km across major exits of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), through which Pacific waters enter the eastern Indian Ocean. The region hosts energetic internal tides and intense mixing that affect ITF water‐mass transformation, with implications for Indo‐Pacific...

Numerical Modelling of the Barotropic Tides in the Gulf of Aden

The Gulf of Aden (GA) is a strategically dynamic water basin linking the Red Sea basin with the Arabian Sea via the Bab el Mandeb Strait. In spite of its importance for oil transportation globally and regional hydrodynamics, tidal propagation remains relatively understudied. Thus, in this study, a depth-averaged 2D bar...

Relative Roles of Surface Fluxes and Strait of Hormuz Exchanges to the Arabian Gulf Salinity Evolution

This study investigates the interannual salinity variability in the Arabian Gulf and its relationship with surface freshwater fluxes and lateral water exchanges through the Strait of Hormuz (SoH). Using a 29‐year high‐resolution MIT general circulation model simulation (1993–2021), we quantify basin‐mean salinity c...

Generation and Transformation of Nonlinear Internal Waves in the Kara Gates Strait, Arctic Ocean

This work examines the diverse mechanisms underlying the generation of nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) through the complex transformation of tidal energy in the Kara Gates, a large strait at 70.5°N separating the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago from Vaygach Island and characterized by intense tidal dynamics. In situ data...

Local and Cross‐Basin Driving Mechanisms for Marine Heatwaves in the Kuroshio Extension Region

Marine heatwaves (MHWs)—prolonged periods of anomalously warm ocean temperatures—have intensified in recent decades, exerting profound impacts on marine ecosystems and fisheries. Using the OISST V2.0 data set from 1982 to 2023, this study examines the distribution characteristics of MHWs in the Kuroshio Extension Reg...
