Abstract

This study assesses the spatial dynamics of heavy metals and associated trace elements in the water and sediment of the Slaná River approximately one and half year after an environmental accident and river contamination caused by mining effluent. Using PCA and standardized environmental indices (CF, PLI), we modelled the distribution of contaminants across the macro-gradient of the river and within the micro-gradient surrounding the source of pollution. We found that although the situation in the water column has improved and stabilized, the sediment remains the primary reservoir of trace elements, including toxic arsenic, with the highest concentrations recorded near the source and in its immediate vicinity. Although the concentration of primary mining indicators decreases relatively rapidly along the stream, this is systematically offset by the accumulation of other elements, including sulphur and aluminium. As a result of these geochemical processes, the total pollution load index (PLI) remains statistically unchanged along the entire stream, but indicates a chronic, spatially uniform (PLI = 1.06-1.16) toxicological burden on the ecosystem.

Spatial patterns and ecological significance of heavy metals in water and sediments of the Drini–Buna river system

The Drini River Basin represents the largest river system in Albania and plays a key role in supporting freshwater resources, biodiversity, hydropower production, and human activities. This study evaluated the distribution, contamination status, and ecological risk of trace metals in water and surface sediments collect...

Pollution and ecological risk of the potentially toxic elements (arsenic, lead, and cadmium) in acid mine drainage-impacted waters of Lake Uru Uru and tributaries, a Ramsar site, Bolivia

Acid mine drainage (AMD), owing to its high content of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), impacts ecosystem health through the contamination of tributary rivers. This study evaluates the spatial and temporal distribution of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in the surface waters and AMD of the Lake Uru Uru wate...

Distribution of heavy metals in surface water and sediments of the Coata River Basin, Peru: Seasonal variability and ecological risk assessment

Mining, urban wastewater discharge, and intensive agriculture have degraded freshwater quality across the Andean Altiplano, yet integrated multi-parameter assessments remain scarce for high-altitude tributaries of Lake Titicaca. This study evaluated the spatial and seasonal distribution of seven heavy metals (As, Cd, C...

Chromium as a severe anthropogenic geochemical anomaly in river sediments near a tannery outfall: spatial attenuation, source apportionment and ecological risk screening

Relocating a polluting industry can transfer contamination to a new receiving water body rather than eliminate it, yet the resulting sediment footprint is rarely resolved beyond surface contamination. This study quantified the spatial and depth-resolved sediment footprint of relocated tannery discharge in the Dhaleshwa...
