Morphometric analyses reveal significant multivariate differentiation among species, with the number of ventral scale rows confirmed as a reliable diagnostic character separating H. gramineus from H. nzingae, raising the number of Hemidactylus species recorded from Angola to twelve, reinforcing the country's significance as a major centre of gekkonid diversification in sub-Saharan Africa.
Abstract
The
Hemidactylus bayonii
species group is the most diverse clade of Angolan gekkonids, currently comprising three endemic species (
H. bayonii
,
H. vernayi
and
H. nzingae
) and one species known from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (
H. gramineus
). The taxonomic validity of
H. gramineus
has previously been questioned because of its description from only two specimens with low mitochondrial divergence from its closest relative,
H. nzingae
. Here, we report the first confirmed record of
H. gramineus
from Angola, based on a newly discovered population near Quinguengue, Malanje Province, occurring within the Western Congolian Forest/Savanna Mosaic ecoregion. Integrating mitochondrial (
ND2
) and nuclear (
RAG-1
) sequence data with multivariate morphometric analyses, we recover four well-supported lineages corresponding to the four recognised species of the group. Nevertheless, given the marked morphological conservatism within the group, the relatively low levels of genetic divergence, and the limited genetic and geographic sampling currently available, further investigation is warranted to determine whether these lineages truly represent independently evolving units. The Quinguengue material clusters unambiguously with nominotypical
H. gramineus
, showing negligible intraspecific mitochondrial divergence (<0.5%) and no nuclear allele sharing with
H. nzingae
. Morphometric analyses reveal significant multivariate differentiation among species, with the number of ventral scale rows confirmed as a reliable diagnostic character separating
H. gramineus
from
H. nzingae
, while dorsal coloration is shown to be variable within species and thus unreliable for identification. These findings raise the number of
Hemidactylus
species recorded from Angola to twelve, reinforcing the country’s significance as a major centre of gekkonid diversification in sub-Saharan Africa.
We describe two new species of the genus Hemidactylus Goldfuss, 1820, namely Hemidactylus cairnicola sp. nov. and H. koyaorum sp. nov., from Nalgonda and Warangal districts of Telangana State, India, respectively, based on an integrative assessment of external morphology and mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (...

This study reports the first record of Ornithocoris pallidus associated with a Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) nest in the Brazilian Pantanal supported by integrative morphological and molecular identification. Ectoparasites associated with nests can compromise the health and development of birds that use r...

Ischyropsalis C.L. Koch, 1839 is a genus of harvestmen inhabiting both terrestrial surface habitats and caves in central and southern Europe. The accepted number of species is controversial due to feature similarities and their strong sexual dimorphism. The northern part of the Iberian Peninsula harbours 16 accepted sp...

This study represents the first mtCOI-based molecular characterisation of a species belonging to the subfamily Eumeninae in Uzbekistan and demonstrated that all A. parietum specimens formed a strongly supported monophyletic clade with a bootstrap value of 100%.

Polyopisthocotylans of the Diplozoidae are hematophagous gill parasites of freshwater cyprinoids; however, their diversity in East African river systems remains poorly characterised. In this study, we describe Paradiplozoon gladysae n. sp., a novel diplozoid recovered from the gills of an endemic cyprinid Labeo victori...

This eastern lineage of Heremites Gray, 1845 is described as a new species, currently known from two foothill localities along the southern margin of the Hindu Kush, and discussed its biogeographic significance and the need for a further genus-wide integrative revision.
