TL;DR

A simple quantitative framework is established linking cerebral oxygen metabolism to gray matter microstructural features in healthy humans using advanced non-invasive MRI methods, providing the first quantitative evidence that cerebral metabolic demand is coupled to microstructure in humans.

Microstructural heterogeneity of white-matter aging and its age-dependent coupling to cognition

Brain white matter (WM) microstructure undergoes extensive changes with age, yet the regional and cellular heterogeneity of age-related WM alterations and their impact on cognition remain unclear. Leveraging Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI), an advanced microstructural modelling to capture spe...

Microstructural Characterization of Functional Network-Based Neurodegeneration in Multiple Sclerosis Using High-Gradient Diffusion MRI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Neurodegeneration is a key component of clinical disability in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the underlying mechanism of localized gray matter (GM) atrophy in MS remains unknown. More recently, a network-based etiology has been postulated, which may be associated with clinical progression. Th...

Gray Matter Volume and Intrinsic Timescale and Their Spatial Coupling Alterations in the Brains of Preterm Infants.

Findings suggest that preterm birth-related neurodevelopmental alterations may be associated with differences in the coordination between brain structure and function, which could be related to variations in neurobehavioral outcomes, and indicate that neuroimaging may provide useful insights into early neurodevelopment...

Altered Intersubject Variability of Morphological Connectivity in Cerebral Small Vessel Disease and Its Associations With Gene Expression and Cell Types.

BACKGROUND Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a heterogeneous disorder; however, interindividual variability in morphometric brain connectivity remains unclear, as does its association with gene expression. METHODS We enrolled 65 patients with CSVD and 35 healthy controls. Individual-level morphometric brain net...

Age-dependent brain mechanics are linked to microstructural changes.

Accurate knowledge of brain tissue mechanics is essential for understanding the pathologies that cause mechanical changes and for developing reliable computer models for neurosurgical procedures. However, the age-related changes in brain mechanics and their microstructural basis are not fully understood. In this study,...

Oxygen extraction fraction mapping between normal cognition and mild cognitive impairment in older adults using quantitative BOLD

Abstract Oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) represents the proportion of oxygen utilized by the brain from the blood and is a sensitive biomarker in understanding the vascular interplay between oxygen supply and demand. Alterations in OEF are increasingly recognized in normal aging and the pathophysiology of many neurolo...
