Composite Materials: A fundamental Overview

Sep 2026 · International Journal of Scientific Research in Science and Technology · 0 citations · 3 references

Abstract

Composite materials are one of the most important groups of innovative engineering materials due to their remarkable combination of properties such as lightweight, high specific strength, high stiffness, corrosion resistance and excellent durability. Composites, by combining two or more different constituents, usually a continuous matrix and a reinforcing phase, display superior qualities compared to their individual components. This review provides an in-depth look at the basics of composite materials such as the definition, the history, the constituent materials, the classification, the types of reinforcement and the most important mechanical, physical, thermal, chemical, electrical and tribological properties. The article goes into further detail on the main manufacturing methods used for making composites, such as manual lay-up, compression molding, resin transfer molding, vacuum bagging, filament winding, pultrusion and injection molding, and its pros and cons. Further, several technical applications of composites in aircraft, automotive, marine, civil, biomedical, defence, renewable energy and sports industries have been reviewed. The dynamic nature of composite research is illustrated by a review of recent advances in sustainable bio-based composites, hybrid composite systems, nanocomposites, additive manufacturing, and intelligent composite systems. To summarize, composite materials remain an essential component in the solution of contemporary engineering problems due to their adjustable features, enhanced structural efficiency, and eco-friendly options. Future improvements will probably be grounded on recyclable materials, smart composite systems and sophisticated production processes to address the growing need for high-performance and sustainable engineering applications.
