Findings revealed VfTCP19/21/23 as potential candidate genes for future stress-resistance breeding and enhanced drought and salt tolerance by regulating stomatal aperture, strengthening water retention, improving water status, and scavenging ROS, thereby alleviating leaf wilting.
Abstract
Faba bean provides food and feed, also improves field soil. However, its sustainable production is severely constrained by adverse environmental conditions. Identification desired genes could provide resources for resistance breeding, thus improve field performance. Here, 24 VfTCP transcription factors were identified and characterized as nucleus-localized, unstable, hydrophilic proteins. VfTCPs were under strong purifying selection, and their promoters contained cis-elements related to growth, development, and stress responses. Transcriptome profiling and RT-qPCR confirmed their stress-responsive expression patterns. Experimental analyses confirmed the nuclear localization and GAL4-based transcriptional activation activity of VfTCP19/21/23. Transient overexpression of VfTCP19/21/23 contributed to pathogen resistance by maintaining ROS homeostasis and attenuating BAX-, NIP-, and INF1-induced. Meanwhile, they enhanced drought and salt tolerance by regulating stomatal aperture, strengthening water retention, improving water status, and scavenging ROS, thereby alleviating leaf wilting. These findings revealed VfTCP19/21/23 as potential candidate genes for future stress-resistance breeding.
Findings suggest that FaAP2-11 contributes to coordinating transcriptional and physiological responses associated with abiotic-stress acclimation and supports its potential as a candidate gene for improving drought and salinity resilience in strawberry.

SUMMARY Drought is widely recognized as one of the most severe abiotic stresses limiting plant growth and productivity. Proanthocyanidins (PAs), as key functional secondary metabolites, are central to enhancing plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. Nevertheless, the specific mechanisms underlying PA‐mediated drought res...

Aquaporins (AQPs) facilitate transmembrane water transport and are essential for plant growth, development, and stress adaptation. Camellia oleifera is an important woody edible oil tree. Drought stress frequently occurs during the rapid fruit expansion and maturation stages, and AQPs might mediate its drought response...

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), a high-quality perennial legume forage, is essential to global agriculture and ecosystems. Expanding alfalfa production on saline-alkaline soils is critical to alleviate shortages of high-quality forage in China, but progress is limited by a shortage of salt-tolerant varieties and incomple...
