Abstract

PROBLEM Interprofessional collaboration is essential in today's healthcare environment. As such, preparing the next generation to confidently and sustainably enter the workforce is increasingly urgent. Experiential interprofessional education (IPE) interventions are particularly effective in bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical application. Community-based education further enriches these outcomes by immersing students in real-world environments that emphasize patient-centered care and responsiveness to community needs. However, IPE remains challenging to design and deliver in the clinical learning environment. APPROACH The purpose of this report is to describe the design, implementation, and five-year outcomes of the Interprofessional Internship as a proof of concept for high-quality, community-based IPE, delivered from September 2020 to May 2025 through the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The model incorporates health profession intern teams carefully matched with community partner projects in areas such as quality improvement, community engagement, and organizational change, as well as professional development experiences designed to further advance interns' interprofessional competency. OUTCOMES The Interprofessional Internship has completed 36 projects with 19 community organizations and involved 69 students from 24 academic programs. In line with internship goals, interns reported increased confidence in interprofessional competencies, corroborated by peer assessments, and outcomes demonstrate community partner engagement and their ability to advance their work through high-impact projects addressing health needs across the state. NEXT STEPS This innovative Interprofessional Internship offers a tangible, replicable model of training that integrates IPE into community-based experiential education while yielding meaningful community outcomes. Future pursuits beyond for-credit offerings include, but are not limited to, multi-partner community-based project design, longitudinal connections to geographically- or organizationally aligned learner teams with on-site experiential rotations, and integration of patients and communities in project work.

Partnering for system change: interprofessional education and collaborative practice and health systems science.

The evolving landscape of healthcare underscores the necessity for innovative approaches to health professions education. Interprofessional education (IPE) is one pedagogical innovation in health professions education that supports the development of collaborative practice and team-based care. Within American medical schools, Health Systems Science (HSS) has emerged as a curricular movement aimed at equipping future physicians with a comprehensive understanding of care delivery, interprofessional collaboration, and system improvement. A foundational domain within HSS is "teaming." In this article, we explore four ways Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) educators can partner with HSS educators to support the objectives of creating health system citizens and sustainable system transformation for all health professions by: 1) leveraging all health professional learners to learn about the HSS domains; 2) understanding the context of interprofessional teams; 3) including patients as members of the team; 4) and re-conceptualizing leadership. Embracing IPECP concepts within HSS frameworks fosters a holistic view of teamwork, patient-centered care, and leadership, ultimately supporting a cultural shift toward a more integrated and effective healthcare system. This educational transformation is crucial for developing future health professionals who are adept at navigating and improving our dynamic healthcare systems.

Effectiveness of an interprofessional experience in building confidence and recognizing communication skills in healthcare students using the self-reported interprofessional collaborative competency attainment survey (ICCAS).

The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an Interprofessional education (IPE) experience using the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment survey (ICCAS). In total, 319 physical therapy and nursing students participated in a single IPE experience held annually over 3 years. All students were shown two patient care simulation videos highlighting two different styles of communication. Pre- and post‑activity, students anonymously completed the ICCAS. As a group, all 20 ICCAS items showed significant improvement with large effect sizes. The largest effect size was found for item 1: "Promote effective communication among members of an IP team." The largest domain improvement was found in communication. The secondary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between change scores from ICCAS items #1 to #20 with ICCAS question #21. This study found that a single IPE experience using peer discussion and video was a highly effective and efficient way to enhance interdisciplinary communication and other IPE domains among nursing and physical therapy students. This IPE experience, which covers the IPE core competencies of values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams/teamwork, should be considered by other programs looking for new and effective ways to incorporate IPE into their curriculum.

Ten years of student-reported outcomes from simulation-based interprofessional education in an underrepresented academic setting.

Sustained exposure to simulation-based IPE was associated with positive student-reported perceptions of interprofessional learning in a minority-serving academic health context, and the importance of role clarification, structured pre-briefing, competency-aligned simulation objectives, and reflective debriefing to strengthen IPE outcomes is highlighted.
