Abstract

Caucalis platycarposL. is a medicinal plant belonging to the Apiaceae family, growing wild in Dreat forest of M'sila, Algeria. It is traditionally used in folk medicine for the management of cancer. The objective of this study is to characterize the chemical composition of Algerian Caucalis platycarposL. essential oil and to evaluate its potential applications based on the identified constituents. Therefore, we herein present the first report on Algerian C. platycarposessential oil composition obtained by hydrodistillation, analyzed by GC-MS. Thirty four compounds were identified in the essential oil, constituting 88.3 % of its overall composition. Monoterpenes derivatives represented 64 % of the oil, whereas sesquiterpenes formed 24.3 %. The main constituents of the essential oil were α-pinene (22.2%), β-phellandrene (15.7%), myrcene (6.9%) and (E)-β-ocimene (5.3%). This study represents a contribution to the characterization of Algerian botanical understudied species and theiressential oils, which can form a promising source of bioactive compounds, indicating possible applications in multiple domains
