Abstract

Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, and let $c_0(G)$ be the least integer such that every regular sequence over $G$ of at least this length is an additive basis. Let $\mathsf N(G)$ be the least integer $l$ such that every weak-regular sequence $S$ over $G$ with $|S|\ge l$ has a nonempty zero-sum subsequence $T$ satisfying $\mathsf v_g(T)=\mathsf v_g(S)$ for some $g\mid S$. We obtain a common upper bound for $c_0(C_q\oplus C_{nq})$ for groups of odd order, where $q$ is prime, and prove $\mathsf N(G)\ge r(n_r-1)+1$ when $G=C_{n_1}\oplus\cdots\oplus C_{n_r}$ with $1<n_1\mid\cdots\mid n_r$. If $n\ge1$ and $p\ge3$ is the smallest prime divisor of $np$, we obtain $\mathsf N(C_p\oplus C_{np^2})=2np^2-1$ and give upper bounds for $\mathsf N(C_p\oplus C_{np})$ when $p\nmid n$. We also determine $\mathsf N(C_n)$ for two infinite families of cyclic groups arising in earlier work.

The Erd\H{o}s--Ginzburg--Ziv theorem for finite groups

Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $p$ be the smallest prime divisor of $|G|$. The Gao constant $\mathsf{E}(G)$ is the least integer $\ell$ such that every sequence over $G$ of length $\ell$ contains a subsequence of length $|G|$ whose terms can be ordered to have product equal to the identity. In 1961, Erd\H{o}s, Ginz...

The Nil K-groups of finite groups

We show that for every finite group $G$ and every integer $n$, the Nil group $\mathrm{NK}_n(\mathbb{Z}[G])$ of the integral group ring of $G$ has finite exponent, and give a bound depending on n and the order $|G|$. This bound is explicit when every prime divisor of $|G|$ is at least $3+n/2$. More generally, our finite...

Conjugation Differential Invariants of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ on trace-free matrices

Let $q=p^k$ be prime power, let $F= \mathbb{F}_q$ and let $V$ be the vector space of 2 by 2 matrices over $F$ with trace zero. Let $G = \mathrm{SL}_2(F)$. Then $G$ acts on $V$ via conjugation. Let $\Omega = S(V^*) \otimes \Lambda(V^*)$ be the algebra of differential forms on $V$. A minimal generating set for $\Omega^G$...

Finite Length of Locally Analytic Vectors for $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ and $D_F^\times$

Let $F/\mathbf Q_p$ and $E/\mathbf Q_p$ be finite extensions, and let $G=\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ or $D_F^\times$, where $D_F$ is the quaternion division algebra over $F$. Let $\Pi$ be an admissible Banach $E$-representation of $G$ whose locally $\mathbf Q_p$-analytic vectors $\Pi^{\mathrm{an}}$ have an infinitesimal characte...

Orbits of $p$-Nilpotent Group Actions for Small Primes

Let $G$ be a finite solvable group and $V$ be a faithful completely reducible $G$-module. We improve previous bounds for the sizes of defect groups of blocks of solvable groups through an improved bound on vector stabilizers of $p$-nilpotent groups. Specifically, if $G$ is 2-nilpotent and $2 \nmid |V|$, then there exis...

On a classical zero-sum invariant II: Disproof of a long-standing conjecture

For a nontrivial finite abelian group $G$, let $\nu(G)$ be the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every zero-sum free sequence $T$ over $G$ of length at least $\ell$ has the following property: all nonzero elements of $G$ that do not occur as a subsequence sum of $T$ lie in a proper coset of some subgroup of $G$. It is...
